check the drive shaft to gearbox gaiters for cuts or splits, will have messy grease on them if so, lift front of car and turn each wheel to see if they turn without any rough feel to them, thats usually been the problem with mine over the years i have had it ! (487000 mls !!) if it needs a shaft, i have found the cheapest place is GFS car parts, good luck ! Also check the rubber joints on lower arms, and ball joints for any wear !

Thanks for the reply.the gaitor on the passengers side at the gearbox end has a big tear in it but there seems to be some grease still in it.could this be the problem and if so,would packing it up with grease solve the problem?

Also check the front tyres for ply separation i.e. bumps.

The driveshaft will need pulled out and a new cv boot fitted. The shaft may be worn or not. Check that shaft and all the other things mentioned.

in my experience, fitting a new gaiter, with new grease is a waste of time, the damage will already be done ! also, its best to fit a new shaft, as a used one could be just as bad !
