Super unleaded or regular fuel for 1.4 Clio mk2

Hi, I have just started to fix my family car with a few issues. I have ordered a new fuel tank and I was wondering what super unleaded such as tesco 99 momentum would do to the car.

It has never been run on any other fuel other than regular supermarket fuel. Stick to regular or use premium for a few fills

Is the car the clio in your profile? If so I'd say you wont notice any difference in usable power / mpg.

If you meant internal cleaning / protection power for the wellbeing of the engine / fuel system, as far as I am aware the octanicity of supermarket "performance" fuel is made up with just ethanol, as opposed to a mix of ethanol and the variety of cleaning / oily additives that say Shell or BP fuels have. (Though I have no idea of what a chemical report would say!)

Save that extra couple of quid for a well earned brew down the pub i'd reckon

Yeah, I already added the fuel and took the injectors off and gave it a full service. It had really old fuel in the system (3-4 years). Also, the car started up a few weeks back without a problem with jump. These clios are solid if taken care of.

Ah, stale petrol is certainly no good. Lawnmower fodder at best

Good to hear it goes well, I find a lot of the old sewing machines usually only get scrapped because of age or a severe lack of servicing, rarely owing to expensive mechanical / electrical failures. Just had a friend at work trade in his old 1.2 clio, nice clean little car - nothing wrong with it at 120k miles, no real rust at 14 years old. Down the scrapyard it went though out of his laziness, madness!

I'd say give it a shot and see what happens. I run the Saab almost exclusively on Shell V-Power (or whatever they're calling it this week) and the car runs noticeably better. I refuse generally to touch supermarket fuels as without exception every time I've had a fuelling problem it has immediately followed fuelling up there. Coincidence? Probably. Still makes me uneasy though.

As far as I'm aware the branded premium fuels are generally still ethanol free (or at least were a couple of years back), whereas supermarket fuels generally contain a few percent ethanol these days. This info dates from a good few years ago though and is from word of mouth from an engineer I trust, but I've not really done any digging to confirm or deny.

I picked up an old 2.2TiD saab to run me around while mending my pug - not a bad little banger, amusingly ran better (well, was faster) on my shed brew fuel than on shells ordinary diesel!

Whatever is cheapest in your area, that's the rule I go by. It's not failed me yet in 26 years of driving. For a 1.4 Clio, 95 RON, normal supermarket fuel will be just fine, as you won't notice any performance difference with the more expensive fuel.
