Urgent: help needed loan of die for 3.5mm pipe flare

Post by John Plum »

I wondered if you can help with loan of 3.5mm citroen dies for flare tool: Otherwise I have a car raised on the public road, and liable to be unusable for ages, due to supplier of dies. I live in West London and can travel by public transept, OR perhaps a loan by post?

The tool is this one:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CITROEN-BRAKE ... b0RH-kyoML

Suspension pipe part number , 5270 PL, HYDRAULIC TUBE LEFT DIAM 3,5 is longer available: It has an LDS style union on the sphere end, a normal LHM union on the anti-sink valve end.
Eurocare can't help right now with their hybrid solution (out of stock).

I have a citroen flare tool, I obtained an LDS pipe for a C5 and cut the end, ready to flare
for standard LHM union.
But disaster! The 3.5 mm die for my flare tool is unusable because the two halves are different sizes although stamped 3.5mm! (it was unused since buying it - I had only used the 4.5mm) . It will take up to a month to get a replacement, because it goes via supplier to manufacturer - they don't have dies separate from kits - and the manufacturer is slow, as they depend upon batch make ups.
Cheers, John

BL Autos is in that neck of the woods, they can probably flare it. Plaeides is only a bit north at Sawtry, and they definitely could!

Thanks Richard; I'm on public transport now.
Anything closer to the A40, West London, near Ruislip? - I'm a long way from East London/Essex for BL autos.

John ... which half of the die itself do you have/need? Surely both halves are symmetrical?? I'm not sure but that unit looks to be a Plaeides one maybe rebranded?

Yes both are symmetrical. I've just spoken to Bill at Plaeides, and I'm waiting for a call back from Martin, who'll answer whether they can help with a die; i suspect they don't make them any more - maybe they'll have a spare set though… hopefully.

While you're on pipes I wonder if anyone can id this one, it's new in the bag Citroen but the part number has been obliterated from the bag.

Looks to me like a late pump to regulator pipe but for what variety of hydraulic Citroen I don't know.. I'd guess a 1.8 or 2.0 petrol Xantia..

Well if it's good for anyone on here it's free gratis, it's been moved from shelf to shelf too many times and has to go. :)

It's useful to have just for the fittings.. A lengthening section of pipe can easily enough be brazed in to make it fit whatever car it's needed on ;)

I braze repaired one which had twisted at the pump union, with just enough room. Had to make up in selected brass tube a joint, which I had drilled on lathe to provide the sockets for the cut ends of pipe. Works like a charm, two years on.
Is that the way you approach such joins Jim?

The News is good (this bit); 3.5mm Dies received today, adapted part flared and fitted. Chassis Suspended under Hydraulic pressure,no obvious leaks. A short road test, successful. :-). CHildren informed their scheduled outings to football practice and match , Horse riding, etc,. are on.
And thanks again for moral support.
