I need Little Rant - Please Indulge Me!
Been to see daughter No2 this weekend who lives getting on for 200 miles away to see her (honest) and to change the injection pump on her fiancee's Land Rover. All went well with that but I noticed one of the aux belts was de-laminating so off to the motor factors, which is miles away because they live in the middle of nowhere.
Now we are not talking national chain here but an independent shop, like they used to be - well nearly but not quite.
Conversation went as follows.
Me "Have you got a 1025mm v belt"
Shop Assistant "What is the registration of the vehicle?"
Me "That's not going to help you, its had an engine change, it was a petrol and now its a diesel. Its got an early 200tdi engine if that helps"
Shop Assistant "I need the vehicle reg number so I can look up the size of belt you need"
Me "I know what size the belt is from the part number on it, its 1025mm long and 13mm wide"
Shop Assistant "I still need the vehicle reg so I can find the part on the system"
Me "But its had an engine change so the system will think it is a 2.25 petrol engine and will tell you the belts for that engine"
Shop Assistant "I need the reg number, then the system show me the right parts for your vehicle"
Me "Can you search by part numbers, v belt lengths are usually incorporated into the part number can you look for a v belt with 1025 in the part number"
Shop Assistant "If you give me the vehicle registration then the system will list the part number of the belt you need"
Me "Can you go and have a look at your stock of v belts and see if you can find one that 1025 long"
Shop Assistant "When you give me the vehicle registration the system will tell me where the belt is in the warehouse so I can go and get it"
Me "Thanks but I really don't think that's going to work, because its got the wrong engine in it"
At which point I left the shop to blindly follow my satnav off a cliff if that's where it sent me!!!!
What is the world coming to? Have we become totally incapable of thinking for ourselves and not being a slave to "the system".
Anyway I'd just fitted a 300tdi injection pump to the 200tdi engine so that's really going to mess the system up even further!!!!
Ok rant over - just don't fit non standard parts to your car.

That is just sheer crazy
For a parts factor to take that attitude is atrocious...

Probably one of the public sector workers who've been dumped from his normal role of f*****ng with the public since the downturn, doesn't know any better.CitroJim wrote:That is just sheer crazyFor a parts factor to take that attitude is atrocious...

Thanks guys I feel so much better now.
Back home now where my local spares shop will find you the right belt if you turn up with a piece of string the right length.

Yep...I've played that game...Skoda is always a laugh as the system never has anything listed.
Try to avoid using the reg to look up the Xantia if I can as 50% of the time it comes up as a Saxo! GSF got it right at least, Halfrauds though are convinced it's a 1.1 petrol Saxo...

Re: I need Little Rant - Please Indulge Me!
it's the same at ECP......for bulbs FFS!!!
needed spare bulbs for van, no list in manual, couldn't be bothered to take out the neccessary bulbs to make list sooooo.....ECP, reg no. bulbs purchased.
got home to upgrade the dip beams....wrong ones, computer thinks H1/H7's, real world is H4's...aaaagh.
meantime i realise the DRL's are shot as well so i also need 2x 21/5w stop/tail for said application....reg no please?
i argue that is no use, 2 people check the bulbs against a chart, staggered pins so a standard stop/tail fitment, still 1 of them isn't convinced and tries to input on computer to no avail because he has no reg no. !!!!
they're consumables that fit any car....](./images/smilies/eusa_wall.gif)
