Crashy c5 ride

Unread post by zs&tas »

So my c5 never rode brilliant but it was ok, more recently the back end in particular is quite crashy feeling, at high speed dosnt seem so bad but low speed I dont like it any more, I was thinking spheres but guess that would affect high speed too so I am wondering if I need new shocks at the back ? Would that give a smoother ride ?

There are no shocks - the spheres are spring and shock absorber in one piece.

It's most likely to be; ride height drifted out of spec (too high or too low), spheres need replacing (gas pressure low through age), rear suspension arm bearings worn out and seizing.
We can see it's a 2004 model, how many miles has it done? Has it been used for towing a lot?
What spec car is it? Does it have H3+ or just H3? (+ has the 'sport' button)

No sport just 4 sphere hit 96k other day, hasnt been towing since 63k before that I dont know. Ride height is 5 mm below spec.
Interesting about arm bearings I do have a knock at the right rear when it unloads on right turns.
I will have them look at all this in the mot feb.

I had to replace mine at about 180k. I changed the spheres and it didn't make much difference and then found that the rear suspension would not move up and down without a lot of effort, under normal conditions with good spheres you should be able to move the back up and down fairly easily about 6".

Yeah it moves but not easy, not by hand, when I jump on the tow bad or rear door seals I can get it moving but not great.

Sounds like arm bearings and correcting the ride height is the place to start, then.

Two hammers "clacking" together = rear arm bearings, it always is :(
