C5 s1 Vs C5 s2 (facelift)

Post by wurlycorner »

Ok, so having been looking round today, there are s1 and s2's in my price range/locality.

What are the pro's and con's of each?

Obviously there are some cosmetic differences - s2 is prettier from the front end, s2 main dash is perhaps slightly prettier with the trim piece that runs full width across it. I think the clocks in the s2 look tacky but that's not a problem, I can swap them easily enough (I assume all use the same connectors/signals)...

Aside from that, what else is there of note different between the 2 (reliability/complexity/comfort wise) please?

Is there anything in particular I should specifically look for if I go to see an s2?

Thanks :-D

Other than the emissions gubbins on late engines of the Mk1 and all Mk1Face there is little different between the two other than front wings etc....they were what it says on the tin, a facelift. They also added the underpowered 1.6 oiler for Company Car Tax reasons......cannot be for anything else as its s**t !

Now what you need is....................just what you know you want :)

Yeah I've seen a couple of those in my price range, so did look into it over the day.
There are some obvious advantages, but I have seen that the engine doesn't have the best reputation (not as bomb proof as the 2.0, needs careful/proper maintenance in order to avoid sludging and of course... THOSE injectors :? ). The thing that really put it out for me though when I looked into it, is that although it has more power than the 2.0, the torque is s**t, so no good for towing heavy stuff IMO.

ACTUALLY Id NOT run the 1.6 HDi 110 down. Its the same power as the original 8v 2.0 engine, and with having one myself now, its is actually not underpowered and is well suited to the car.. The multi valve head does mean needing more revs to work a bit.
The rear end profile is also different between them.. Ive got one of each and looked close at them both.

Facelift model a better car. they ALL have ESP as standard if it tickles your fancy, Im trying to work out of bluetooth for phone use but not music streaming is easy to fit, where the Mk.1 needs a seperate SIM card that slots into the radio and only when Sat Nav is fitted. Phase Two dont need Sat Nav for the bluetooth function when its fitted.

So, 1.6 16v engines are actually ok. Its all down to injector clamp tightness and if ones you look at are not blowing past and sounds all good keep ontop of the clamps at service and she wont go far wrong. They Are a good engine, and this comes from someone who really didnt like them at all!! 12 quid a month road tax plus 55 mpg... Rear arm bearings are still an issue on ALL C5s though as well as the rear calipers leaning in, and lean in badly they do!

2.0 16v hdi is 138bhp, and is PSAs DW related engine, meaning the turbo is on the rear of the engine, but these dont fail as often as the injector clamps are a different design...

I like the Phase 2 overall outside and internally! I cant find many faults... Heaters can give issues, the flaps can play up and stick on hot or cold, useually needing a strip down. check the heater works on all temps, hot and cold. S1s suffer the same issue though. S1s have dual Zone, but in Phase 2 each Zone can have there own vent direction setting from VTR upwards, unlike S1 both sides need the same Vent Flow direction.

Id reccomend the facelift phase 2 to anyone...

Rear end profile of what? The body?
Really? Didn't know that! I thought it was just the bumper that was different?

Also, just thinking on a bit more about the engines... Is there anything different flywheel-wise through the years?

DMFs as useual, unless you go Auto. Phase 2 2.0 16v HDis use an Aisin 6 speed auto box. 2.2s still used ZFs 4 speed HP 20 box. 1.6s manual only. There is a Solid Flywheel conversion for the 1.6 available, but I dont think there is for the 2.0 16v HDi.

Yes, Im sure the rear end profile is slightly modifed looking at them side by side. Unless its a clever effect to the eye ..

On the 1.6 oiler, yes it is a good engine when looked after.....when in the correct car that is. The C5 as big and as heavy as it is is NOT the right car for it is all I am saying, totally the wrong type of power delivery.

Hmmmm. then yes I agree 110bhp no good for towing IN ANY CAR... not just a C5, 2.0 hdi 138bhp would be the one.. In the C5 alone it goes like s o a s!!

Wikipedia says the s2's were lengthened at the back (both the hatch and estate) in comparison to the s1's? So that would explain the difference in profile! Interesting (and surprising!)

Incidentally, the 2.0 110bhp has been fine for my heavy towing. Not lightening quick by any stretch, but quite usable. That's where I meant the 1.6 would be lacking though.

I never noticed that at all, but I did not have my Mk1 Facelift very long and never together.
Strangely, the wooden two part load bed I used for my Mk1 fitted exactly in the Mk1Facelift car.

I used a 2.0 hdi 8v for towing my trailer with a car on it! It was increadably accepatable... The 1.6s have not had tow bars on them. But If cant see what would be an issue as they are both 110bhp, and Im guessing the 1.6 being newer may have more torque, but possibly slightly higher up the rev range...
