C5 2.2HDI 136 5 speed vs 6 speed gears

Post by fv43576 »

I didn't know that C5 2.2HDI 136 2001-2002 the earlier have 5 speed gearbox but later 2002-2003 change to 6 speed gear. I am wonder when it said C5 is do average of 44mpg is this been test on the 5 or 6 gears? Because I only see the performance and top speed is same, How much is different ratio for example mph per 1000 rpm compare on 5 and 6?
Because my brother's C5 gearbox start making noise not from the clutch it is from the gearbox sound like something metal snap or bolt rattles soon after he remove the one of the teeth on 2nd gear is missing 137,000miles on the clock. Will it be better to stick with 5 to recondition £165 or replace 6 speed gearbox from scrapyard £120?

Hi fv, sounds like a good idea, I'm sure the 2.2 mk1 would pull a slighlty higher gear no problem but I've never heard of anyone who's done this swap before - so is it actually possible with out major mods?
Do you have a scrapyard nearby where you could check side by side, find out what the differences are?
As it happens I've just been driving a mk1 and a mk2 2.2 over the last few days. Unfortunately for comparison purposes the mk2 is an auto. Proper waft-mobile though, a really very lazy drive!
The later mk2 had the 2.0 with the same power as the previous 2.2 with a six speeder (recently sold my 407 with that engine) but I don't think mountings etc would be compatable.
Don't forget the later 2.2 had 170 bhp over the earlier 136bhp so that could affect things. What about the clutch model numbers / gearing whell sizes etc?

I think it sounds too risk to swap to 6 gears, mind need major mods so I think it is better to keep the 5 gearbox and go for recondition, do you think recondition do the good job or better just buy from scrapyard low mile?

Hi FV
I think that a reconditioned would give more piece of mind as it should be as the title says "reconditioned". Anything from a scrap dealer will be "sold as seen" with no guarantees it will work other than "It came off a running car mate" and it may not even have oil in it! Those points raised by Monkeyfeet are well made and for peace of mind for a fairly major job like swapping out the gearbox it makes sense to keep things simple and stick with what you know will fit and work.
If the reconditioned gearbox fails to work then you are protected by some consumer laws. I suggest having a chat with the company offering the gearbox reconditioning and find out exactly what guarantees they give, maybe google them to see if they have a good/bad reputation.

Good luck with it mate

Is there a commercial vehicle transmission specialist near you?
They are often cheaper, faster and better than other options, and a straightforward car box is a very easy job for them.
