water heater glow plugs

56 reg xsara picassco 1.6hdi...on the heater glow plugs that sit in the little alloy housing ,,what causes the ecu to turn these on,,,must be temp related ie ect or outside temp...anyone have any info on how system works ,,ie wat when ,how etc or any useful links please

Don't know about the Picasso specifically but on both my C5 and 406 the aux heating comes on automatically if the temp is below about 10C. Never actually seen it in either of mine, only know its there because it works - and very well too.
