1998 Megane PH1 - Heater blower fan

Unread post by bobsy »

Bought an old mk1 Renault Megane last week for not much money. It's in good condition with really low mileage and few problems. The main problem however is that the heater blower doesn't work.
I get warm air coming through the car when I'm moving at speed, but any speed setting on the dashboard doesn't trigger the fan to work.

When I change the dial on the dash between speed 4 and 5 I can hear the clicking of a relay at the bottom of the windscreen somewhere. However, the fan doesn't work at any speed.

I've located the fan at the bottom of the windscreen under the scuttle panel (see pic):

There seems to be very little information online regarding this fault. I've found a small bit of information about the fault either lying with the fan itself or a resistor near by along the power cables. However, I can't follow the red and black cables connected to the fan because they disappear under the air-conditioning units. And I can't see any way to get the fan out of this tiny area.
There is a flap in the bulkhead which I've managed to get my hand into which I think opens up in this area. However, I think the fan must have to come out towards the front of the car, so I can't see how this fan would help.

Can anyone help advise me on how I get this fan out of this area?
Or where I might locate the resistor which may be defective?

Or failing that, can someone advise me on how to take the passenger side of the dashboard apart to perhaps expose this area (I don't mind driving around with the dashboard in bits, but I still need the car to be driveable while I diagnose the fault)

Thanks,
Rob

Thanks for the quick reply Sticky! Unfortunately the Mk2 megane seems to be a very different design. There seem to be no red/black cables to match those connected to the fan behind the dashboard!
Plus the glove box doesn't seem to be able to be removed like the Mk2 glovebox? :(
