C5 HDi Alternator

Post by BenC5HDi »

Hello again,

My post is as per the subject - I need to replace the alternator on my 2003 plate C5 HDi. It is a 2.0 110BHP model. Having read on here, I thought it was the old battery causing the problems. However, upon replacing the battery and doing a BSI reset, it's become apparent that the alternator is knackered and not putting out any charge.

My question is - what's the best way to get the alternator out of it. It looks like through the driver's side wheelarch might be the best idea? Is the alternator the same as on the other HDi engines in the PSA range or do they differ depending on the vehicle and varying electrical demands?

thanks in advance,
Ben

There are always a few of those Alternators around s/h. You are best to take it out and see what you have. Some places sell new items reasonable but they are not OE of course. You can rebuild some alternators. I have done older ones like Bosch and Lucas.
Wheel arch off , but you may need undertray off too if you can't reach the bolts from top. I haven't had mine off, though plenty round about it has been in my greasy maulers.

I wonder if it is possible to replace the brushes with the alternator in situ. My BX stopped charging the battery, but I was able to get replacement brushes for it (for under £15) which fixed that problem.

Assuming it's the same as the Xantia one, then it will come out across the front of the engine if you remove the oil filter (which I think you need to do anyway to get access to the mounting bolts:

It looks slightly different to, and less accessible than the HDi Xantia one. I've not had a chance to have a proper look since my last post, as the weather has been awful up here in Lancashire and we've got another car that's working, so it's not urgent urgent.

thanks for all the pointers

After all your kind advice, and the foul weather up here in Lancs the last week, I took it to Malcolm at Savoy and had him sort it out instead. Job done, all healthy again. Recon alternator, drivebelt and a new battery.
