I drove a lot of those the first time round, learn't to drive in a nearly new Austin A40 van. I see there are a few pickups there but I think they must be conversions as I don't ever remember seeing one in the '50s. Its possible of course that they did make them and they only survived because the were pickups.

Yup, Austin made pick-up versions of the A40 (Devon/Dorset) & (pre-Farina) A55 (&, of course, the A35!) BUT they weren't common' probably because (I doubt) there were any fleet buyers.

Interesting, as I say I don't remember seeing one, I do remember seeing a wood estate car version of the Devon. The van we had was a '55, should have been a Somerset but still had the Devon shape front wings and grill but it was metal radiator with chrome strips on it unlike the rusty chrome one used on the Devon car.

I remember fitting flashing indicators to it when the law regarding trafficators changed.
