UK VED

Post by jgra1 »

hi all.. this comes up from time to time but I am interested to hear your thoughts..

I may buy a new car on Saturday in Wakefield.. and swap my faithful C5 for it..

The new car isn't taxed.. technically when I have paid and have the log book I should be the new owner, although from DVLA point of view I don't think that happens (and their database is updated) until the docs arrived with them..

So, how do I get the car home? The last time I brought a car I couldn't tax it online as I wasn't the owner , or something.. and it was still taxed with the previous owner.. this situation is different as it may not have taxed status on the database when I purchase it..

Maybe I can therefore tax it on Saturday.. but its a long drive to find out I cant..

any thoughts? Post office a possible but a pain..
Insurance wont be changed until I decide to buy it, either..

Nightmare.. don't want to have to go back North on another weekend for it

thanks
John

Hi Jim :) if it's ok a 160hp hdi c5 manual saloon !!

I wanted an exec tourer but I just can't afford one..
I am loathe to part with my old c5 really.. its been a brilliant car for what I paid.. a new mot last night cost one light bulb and for once someone fitted it for me :))

But. I feel like a change .. if I can drive it home legally...

I believe you can tax either over the phone or on-line immediately now.

Its a bit of a grey area, I've bought 2 cars under the new rules.
Green went straight through and I sornd it the evening I brought it home.
I bought a 307 more recently though and had to wait 3 weeks to sorn it as the old owner didn't rush with the paperwork.
I think you can tax on day of purchase, but only with the new keepers supplement and on the condition that the old owner has informed the DVLA of the sale.
My favourite way to get a car home is buy a days insurance for £20, get the old owner to agree not to untax it until the next morning and just drive. I'm prity sure thats legal as long as you call it an extended test drive.

Thanks elma ..I have tried that method before .. may not work as this car seems already sorned
I think if i sort the insurance ahead of time I can tax it on the phone .. maybe I get a days cover in case I buy it..
Will speak to the insurers later.. group 25 as against 19 ...

I think you'll need proper insurance then, the one day stuff doesn't work for taxation purposes.
Cars like that need trailering really unless you can get a trader friend to help out.
Tax and Insurance would work too.

Hmm.. and I lose / pay for 2 months wasted tax as it's nearing the end of month. . The cost of going to see it even without buying is building as well.. and snow around .. from being a likely purchase I am getting cold feet.. shame as a nice car

Thats a shame, the DVLA really made things worse with this new "convenience" system. Hopefully it'll still be there on the 1st for you.

You can do a change of owner via the internet, I did it last week when I sold the 330CI, the system was updated immediately to show that it no longer had RFL. I believe that in your instance provided you do the change Mon - Sat between 8am - 6pm you can phone up and get it taxed instantly.

Tax it online 24/7 with the new keepers supplement, they ask your name and address and if it's a change of keeper, it's recorded instantly on the dvla database. Don't need to wait until the paper document is sent away. I find the system much simpler. The only drawback is you lose one months tax if it is already taxed.

The old wheeze used to be to book an untaxed and/or non MOTd car in for a test near home. Get day insurance and off you go as you are allowed to drive an untaxed and/or non MOT'd car to a pre booked test. Not sure if it was an urban myth but in the days before widespread ANPR unless you were drawing attention to yourself the chance of getting stopped was pretty low so it may have been that people just got away with it.

These days there is a good chance that you will get picked up and stopped and I'm not sure that explaining why you are 200 miles from home and taking a car to an MOT test to a garage that just happens to also be 200 miles away and near home is going to cut it.
