C5 Hdi 8 valve dies on hard acceleration.

Post by Peter.N. »

I normally drive very gently and have no problem but on the rare occasions when I put my foot down hard it just stops, can be very embarrassing. Wait until the display goes out and it will start again but comes up with an engine fault, next time I use it that's gone away.

I suspected the fuel filter although I'm, pretty sure I changed it when I fitted a replacement in tank pump about 10k miles ago. This morning I tried to replicate the fault by driving flat out along the forest track - drove perfectly. :?

I think it may only do it when hot, any ideas? I own a Lexia but it doesn't work and in the last five years I haven't needed it for the C5 or the 406.

I'd change the fuel filter first before looking at anything else.

That's what I thought Richard but the one I have in now has no filter on it, if a new fuel filter doesn't cure it that will be my next step.

Yep, another possibility, although as I said I tried it this morning and it was fine - but it was along a forest track so probably got shook up a bit.

hi Peter, I had this exact problem a year ago..
kept changing regulator.. and occasionally put lexia on and this showed a large discrepancy with one of the injectors, brought one from ebay and problem disappeared instantly..
was a dangerous fault, complete engine shut down at any speed, and a switch off and on at side of road..
the worst occasion was the a3, with no hard shoulder.. about 8 times :)
worth a look
john (there is a post somewhere)

OK John thanks. It died on me when I was overtaking a tractor a tractor on Friday, but I had driven probably 60 miles without incident and did another 100 without problems, it only dies when you try to accelerate hard so I didn't do it for the rest of the journey, its not speed sensitive only load sensitive. I will do a leak off test on the injectors if everything else fails.

yes mine was same Peter.. it seemed to get worse over time, and that A3 journey was the limit really ;)

changing the injector was very easy and cost me at least £20 ! certainly worth a look, lexia on it may help identify the baddun..

it could be other things of course..
I am not likely to be down your way in the near future, although you never know :)

OK thanks. I really will have to try and get my Lexia going, I let someone have it because I couldn't get it to work on my laptop, neither can he, apparently its not good enough, I keep saying I will take my newer one over but just haven't got round to it.

This C5 has another strange fault which may be related, the fuel computer is showing about the same average consumption as the 406 and yet when you fill it up its actually using about 20% more fuel, it has been suggested that could be an injector so I might have to check them anyway.

Peter... I have been here with my Xantia... Its all in my blog on here...

Its absolutly nothing to do with fuel filter on these 8v 2.0 engines... however, I never found out the problem, even after swapping injectors, and engine fuel pump off an engine that didnt have a problem at all...
So instead I sold the car to someone who NEVER EVER drives hard at all!!!

So sadly, its an issue that Ive never solved even with Richard W's help...

Have a read around these pages Peter, its inbetween the pages..

Thanks Paul. Didn't read it all but enough to depress me :( I will go through all the basics just in case but otherwise will just have to keep driving like I usually do and not lend it to anyone.

Something else I have noticed is that it feels as though it is loosing power going up a long hill, it still keeps pulling but wont go any faster if I open the throttle and yet this morning when it was cold I drove it flat out through the forest and it didn't miss a beat.
