xantia brake warning light

Post by rob s f »

recently purchased a 1995 xantia 1.9td, runs very nicely everything works ok but occassionally a red stop light on dash glows on and off along with another red light to its left (looks like brake warning).
brakes etc seem to be working fine. want to check my brake fluid but can't see how - is it all combined with the suspension? if the hydraulic fluid is low would this cause a red light to flicker on and off, if so how do i check the level - is it with engine off and suspension parked?
appreciate any advice

Suspension in the highest position, engine running.
Open the bonnet, at the back left corner ( right as you look at it ), there is a container with a little window, and a needle float gague. This float needs to be between the two lines.

The brakes work off the same reservoir of LHM as the suspension.
The flickering light you mention could be the brake pad warning light.
This could be due to correct function indicating that the front pads are worn out or just as likely a break in the wiring leading to the pads where a bare wire is earthing on the body completing the circuit.
My experience is that the brakes work well even when the pads are worn out. I'd check pads ASAP if you want to save the discs.

The red light to the left of the big red stop light indicates a hydraulic pressure or fluid level fault, the front brake pad wear indicator is orange and is above the hydraulic pressure and fluid light.Do as mbunting describes.

Which only begs the question - where did it go?
Keep any eye on it, and have a look for any suspicious wet patched underneath / on your driveway.
