can anyone answer this question for me?
ive got a replacmant xantia 1.6 rocker gasket which is rubber looking & to the touch.
do i need any kind of gasket sealer when i replace the said gasket?
or do i just need to coat the surfaces with a thin layer of oil, just like an oil fiter???
if i do need a gasket sealer, which one do i get?

well i replaced the rocker gasket today, i did clean off all the old sealer with a platic tool, thanxs anders & some meths on a cloth to remove the old outline trace of the previous gasket.
checked later on tonight, i did notice some oil leaking from it, have found out where it is coming from, its leaking from the cam shaft ends, (from the bottom of the curves). is it gonna be ok to remove it tommorrow & apply some sealant to them areas????
its not leaking alot, but is it worth doing??
what i mean by not leaking alot is about 10-20 drips a minute with the engine running!

p.s. i will probebley seal up the camshaft ends with gasket sealant, but which one do i choose?, any ideas??
i dont really want to change the camshaft seals judging by the amount of work involved (sorry to be a boring old fart!)

Shaun - are you sure its the gasket leaking - not the camshaft oil seals? The rocker cover shouldn't be under pressure and there shouldn't be much oil in the cover as it should drain back into the engine rapidly.
Alternatively - is there any substantial crankcase pressure? - if you remove the filler cap there should be slight but not significant fuming.

The camshaft seals are known service items - usually replaced with replacing of water pump & tensioners when doing the cambelt.
They can leak lot's of oil if worn.
Replacing does not mean severe dismantling of engine - but cambelt & cog must of course be removed in one end.
The opposite end you probably have an ignition distributor - which has a simple O-ring seal behind.
