xantia mk1 ABS questions

I've just fitted a replacement ABS sensor to the front and it has fixed the light being on. At least it had on start-up. After a few seconds driving the ABS light pops back on and stays on. I'm wondering if the problem now is that the toothed ring on the cv joint is too corroded to give a proper signal or perhaps one other wheel ring but how do you determine what one(s) ?

Is there a fault code reader connection for the ABS unit?

Hi Graeme, did you fit an S1 sensor? I ask as S1 and S2 sensors look identical but are incompatible.. Else that then yes, bad reluctor ring teeth or just mucky ones can cause the issue. Try wire-brushing them clean.

Either Lexia or ELIT will diagnose ABS issues and give a clear answer as to the problem.

Hi Jim yes I think it's mk1 but it was off eBay so may be incorrectly listed I think the resistance was correct though as I quickly checked it

Hmmm clearance for the ring wrong? Post a link to the sensor - i had trouble tracking mine down and managed to find some that were correct so can always post a link to that one.

Sensor to ring clearance is a good call Chinkostu

The Diagnostic connector (30 pin) is next to the fusebox in the dash under the hinged cover on the Driver's side Graeme..

Only a Lexia or ELIT will work on an S1..

Some eBay sensors can be a bit borderline... I've known some have a fairly short life...

Something else that can cause a problem is where the heat shield is secured. If it is between the sensor and the hub carrier you have taken the sensor too far away from the reluctor ring. However, if it is between the bolt head and the sensor it is in the right place, and the problem is not for this reason.

Cheers all, not got the link to hand (I'm not on my computer) but it is a Delphi sensor and I thought they write one of the more trusted brands.

I'm not 100% with you on the heat shield issue sorry, the bolt that holds the sensor is stepped after the 13mm head to continue with a smaller threaded extension that the heat shield secures to with a nut. On mine I don't see a way it could fit incorrectly (unless it was all fitted wrong before I went at it...)

I don't have a diagnostic reader but has half hoping I could utilise my old LED flasher I made up to read the XM's various ECUs. I guess it's a different system on the xantia?

Delphi should be OK...

Basically, the heat shield can sit the wrong side of the ABS sensor securing boss and make it sit too far from the reluctor ring...

There should be a gap of just less than a mm between the sensor pole pieces and the ring... Any more and it can get iffy and one symptom can be the ABS releasing the brakes suddenly at low speed... That can be sacry...

yes it is sadly, the Xantia is beyond the era of flashing light diagnostics unfortunately....

Think on a mk1 you can't fit the heatshield wrong as its bolted onto the hub futher along too so cant physically be forced in the wrong place. I snapped the tiny bolts holding my headshield to the Sensor bolt and it's not been an issue

I could Lexia it for you, but I've not actually got it installed at present, as had to get a new laptop....and things are hectic here with building work going on! Drop a PM to Mandrake (Simon), he's in Motherwell, so a bit nearer (I'm in Lanark), and has got the kit.

Thanks Richard, I'm actually closer to you because although I live in Glasgow my patents live in Carluke and that's where all the car work is done!

Well, I'm back working on it and looking at the air gap it appears to be much larger that 1mm ( photos to follow later) so perhaps a mismatch. The Delphi part number is SS20011 so maybe it is the wrong part

# stop the bus! Just had a second look at the sensor and compared it to the old one and the mating face boss is considerably further out that would cause the sensor to sit further out.. Think it might be the wrong (later type) part.

I didn't spot it at first as our looked identical otherwise. O well back to square one!
