synergie no starting just click

been happening on and off for a while , starter sometimes just clicks (well solenoid)

am I thinking , battery , earth strap or starter itself?

I would be thinking starter itself. this could mean that the solenoid contacts have burned away and are not supplying voltage to the motor, or it could be worn or sicking brushes, or just a loose main terminal.

leaning towards the brushes in the starter motor - simple to replace?

Starter motor itself easy to replace and not so expensive these days
1998 1.9td Peugeot 806 (Red shed 2)

I would concur but check the battery connections first.

battery connections been replaced :( - was looking at changing brushes first , or pointless and just get a starter? about £60 diference in cost though!

maybe but my local breaker will simply ask to take the old one down to match it ;l) - time to get messy sadly

oh lol they want £30 for a second hand one - found a new one for £10 more!

ECP quoted me £63 for a new one , the £55 one isn't suitable apparently :( (other motor factors want a lot more - a lucas one for £110 for example)

got one new from ebay for £41 inc next day delivery from liquidation stock so tomorrow in the rain I am fitting a new starter ;(

Was it the RTX brand from ECP by any chance ? if so you would have been better off with the second hand one, it would probably have lasted longer. RTX seem to be their own brand starters & alternators. You have to ask yourself why they are often half the price of the cheapest branded one ??
