C5 Coolant temp sensor

Post by andybsmith »

Hi all my temperature gauge has gone a bit erratic, but is generally reading just above cold, the heater works ok, and water/coolant is circulating through the radiator. Does anyone have a picture of where the sensor is located so I can check for loose/dirty connectors or replace whole sensor, also it sounds like the cooling fan is cutting in and out intermittently but running very slowly, a slight hum rather than the normal full on blast. Car is a 53 plate C5 Exclusive 2.2 HDI. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help.

Sorry, can't answer your question - but just to say temperature should read just slightly under half way, water and oil pretty much the same reads - once all warmed up.
Noticed the other day the water temp drops down to the low mark every so often, so maybe I've got a problem too.
Fans are normally variable speed and I can't usually hear them running. If your temperature reading is low then they won't come in much anyway?

Coolant temp sensor is on right hand side of engine as you look into the engine bay. Its about 8 inches down in the middle under a couple of pipes, the top is lime green in colour so should be quite visible. When mine went it showed cold virtually all the time, but would occasionaly read correctly for a while and then plummet again for no reason. Sensor was about a tenner on the Bay.

Resurrecting an old thread. These at £4.75 seem to be the cheapest on eBay. Anyone know if they're ok?
