whats these cables for on a xantia

they are under the gear lever cover,there are two one with white plug on end and other green with plug they are running to the back of the car but not connected to anythink under the gear cover
xantias a 1993 sx ver

Sounds like the connectors for heated seats (switches just in front of gear lever - on later models anyway). The SX has electric rear windows. They often put a standard wiring loom in across the range because it is cheaper than adding bits of loom to the higher spec models.

the elec windows are working in the back so dont know if its that, how would i find out if it is the heated seat wires and would an l reg sx xantia have these but not connected

There should be numbers printed at intervals along the cables length, see if you can spot them.

no numbers that i can see as covered in a foam covering,all i can say is that the green one is alot bigger than the white one

Nat -
As Dave explains - you need to identify the wires by their numbers printed on.
The Xantia Citroen generation of cars uses these prints for cable identification - unlike the earlier Citroens with coloured markers.
The id numbers can then simply be traced from the Xantia electrics schematics.
