Post by KP »

Does anyone know what the flowrate is fr the c5 hydraulic suspension pump is at all?

i dont think its very high but need to know as a potential source for a project :)

You could work it out if you have a fixed volume of oil you could manually turn the pump and count the number of turns it takes to use up the amount? Or similarly see how long the powered pump takes to move say 5 l from one container to another. Not sure how easy it is to hook up pipes to c5 pump ( I still live in the LHM era ;) )

If I had a spare working unit I'd do that but I don't :( trying to find out before splashing out as I'd get the setup working with a used unit then likely buy a brand new one to ensure reliability :)

Nope :) it would be too thick for it as it got cold.

Thinking about it I think the flow rate would be too low as I reckon it's no more than 10litres a minute at best.

Maybe ATE who make the pumps would have a spec sheet?

Why not just buy a 12V hydraulic power pack. I didn't look but would guess that used units are easy enough to pick up. They are used for all sorts of things including tipping trailers used behind jeeps etc, back up hydraulic power for access platforms and for wheelchair lifts.

A quick search shows they draw about 1.8kw and flow 5litres a minutes :(

The flow rate is good but power will mean big fat power feed and earth cables... Also they seems bit dubious about being able to deal with being dunked in water... I need something fully water tight or near enough and the C5 units are near perfect in this respect and perfectly sized as well...

The power drawn is determined both both the flow rate and delivery pressure. In addition there is a certain current draw to overcome inefficiency due to resistance in the windings, losses in the magnetic circuit and friction in the mechanics. 1.8kw would be with the unit delivering full pressure which is often over 200bar. What flow rate and delivery pressure do you require? Would a power steering pump from a C4 or a 307 do the trick? electric power steering pumps were in some older models like the AX as well.

Ideally looking for a compact unit that can do about 5gallons an minute to at least 5bar :) all without needing big massive cable setup and fuses, and is pretty water tight. I did think about power steering pumps but couldn't think of any electric motor powered ones as my brain is fried at the minute :(
Do the C4/307 power their hydraulic steering thru an electric motor then?

Depending on your application, you'll need to consider whether a pump is continuously-rated. Many hydraulics setups only need intermittent pumping, and will have appropriately rated pumps.

At most it will need to run for about 5-30mins. Ideally what I'll get put into the circuit is a pressure switch so when at pressure it cuts out. The final setup may only get used a few times a year, at most an hour or two once a month :)

Yes. The 307/c4 have an electric power steering pump piped to a conventional steering rack.
If you want to pump water I would suggest using a shureflo pump but most of these are rated at 3 bar. Google them to find out more.
I cannot think of any 12v hydraulic pump pump which would be protected well enough to withstand immersion in water.

Thanks for the tip bx :)

It looks like C4 pumps have some controller in them so ordered one up and will see if it's a pressure sensor or some sort or activated from the steering angle sensor.

If it's pressure it's all good it can be left wired through the ignition all the time and if not it will need to be on a switch which is no biggy :)

Thanks again BX
