Ok time for a cuppa... Getting cold lying on the concrete floor of the garage and got side tracked cure rusting the battery tray.
It was a case of mistaken identity Jim.
I'd followed the large pipe back from the ram rather than looking on service Citroen and following the other end. My fault..i should have prepared properly before starting instead if assuming I,knew where the pipes were. I'll replace the pas pipe fill with lhm and see it she leaks.

Chris get some old cardboard boxes and flatten them to lay on or my favourite is the old boot floor sound proofing from a Xantia hatch or estate as its thick and keeps the back and head warm when on the floor for long periods at this time of year :)

Old carpet is good if someone is chucking some out but always give it w good carpet shampoo and dry out first as it then helps fluff it up, they all work well for leaking oil as well when Doing pipes holding oil or fluids :D

That's excellent for a 2.5, I used to get 50 mpg+ from my 2.1s on my Scotland trip - also in the nearside lane.

It's just about calm driving. Don't get me wrong, once a week when the engine is hot it gets thrashed for a minute to clear the exhaust out and help burn off any crud built up in the cylinders(hopefully!) but I just take my time. Worst I've had from it was around 45mpg and that wasn't helped by lots of town work and leaking leak off pipes...

The best for under the car are those thick Yoga or exercise mats. I have a couple of the designer type ones. £3 each from charity shop. Cushion the knees too.

Well 9 1/2hours later I've still got the car up on stands and the undertray is off, but that's all apart from a few liters of lhm, left to do. I cut some rubber fuel pipe to prevent future chafing..but as you said Jim it must have been, the gearbox removal and associated disturbing of the pipes that caused the chafing and the pipe to fail. It failed about halfway between the top of the wheel arch and where it starts to track along the subframe..completely out of sight
Although in taking the old pipe out, I discovered that it wouldn't have been, long before it would have failed in several more places. Thanks for all your help.

Chris, great to hear all is almost all done and that a future set of problems have been avoided as a result :D
