Is this a Xantia record?

Post by c.morewood »

Well it finally happened! At 297,675 miles the original clutch finally gave up. Thankfully not too far from home. I was hoping it wouild have made 300,000 and I would have had it changed on the next trip South. I'm rather looking forward to that as on the last trip to Liverpool a month ago I managed 66.1 mpg..1094 miles for almost 75 liters..that beat my previous best by 2mpg. I'm sure that could be bettered as I had a bit of local running.. 200 miles before leaving for Liverpool.
I've opted for a Luk clutch kit and I'm having the driveshaft seals done as well. Is there anything else I should be considering whilst the clutch is being worked on?

I would change the gearbox oil. Maybe undo the clips on CV boots and check they are full with grease.
Amazing mileage. Possibly a Valeo clutch on the original.

Its a BVM ML5 if I remember correctly. Oil will be done and reluctor rings and cv boots if he has time.

Amazing mileage on the original. Did mine at 186k, the plate was like new . . . the release bearing was on it's last breath.

You are obviously driving it properly  My best was a couple of weeks ago between here and north Yorkshire, 70.7 mpg at an indicated 60 mph, this is in a 406. I did a quick trip to Cornwall and back yesterday and averaged 64.3 mpg but I think most people would not be able to tolerate our driving style.

I think the 8 valve 2.0. Hdi is the best ever common rain engine, mine has covered 243k miles and still has the original clutch and DMF and practically everything else. There are a lot for sale with 200+k miles and a few with 300+ and one I saw at about 450k!

I had a couple of XM diesels with nearly 300k but the head gaskets usually fail at about 150k mine are still original, I also have a C5 with 200k + again mostly original. These engines will reward you for gentle driving not only with fuel consumption but also long life.

Chris, that's brilliantly fantastic :D Surely a record!

How did it fail? Extreme slippage or did the release bearing pull out of the diaphragm?

Thanks Jim, No slippage at all the clutch pedal just went halfway down and didnt come up.. I was parking at the time, so I got out and pulled it up and finished parking.. it all seemed ok .. I thought I might get home so when I'd finished in the hospital I started up and drove off to a screeching for about 30 seconds but as soon as I pressed the clutch again it went down and stayed down..Does that sound like the hydraulic actuator has popped?
Thanks Peter, I often wondered if the Peugeot would be more economical without the hydraulic pump to run.
All my mpg figures are from brim to brim and I now tend to cruise at 60-65 indicated which turns out to be 55-60 on the GPS.. but I do coast when i can :-)

Sounds like the release bearing has popped out Chris,

The slave may have popped apart but it's easily recoverable as long as it's not completely popped and the piston has remained in the bore..

But then again it is possible to bleed them... We know how ;)

Does EGR never give issue without any real revving? Or do you blat it occasionally?

Perhaps but it's relaxing and it don't half make consumables like tyres and disc pads last a long time as well as the car generally...

Not to mention the frugal use of fuel and the massive reduction in stress and irritation...

It's win all the way :-D

I used to do about 30k per year when I was working but found that I arrived a lot fresher if I sat in the n/s lane with the lorries, as you say Jim you get an immediate improvement in fuel consumption and tyre and brake pad consumption.

Lexi

Don't have a problem with anything on the engine but the exhaust system does collect a lot of soot, very occasionally I boot it if I am trying into get into a gap and it leaves quite a deposit on the road but otherwise no problems.

Still on the original clutch on the hatchback when I parked it up at 325k miles, but had to replace the one in my "new" estate a week after I got it at 192k miles. However that was due to the bearing pulling out not because the plate had worn out. Given that I had a spare clutch that had only done 30k in my old 2.1td there was no way I wasn't going to change it after getting the box out to sort the bearing. I'm amazed how it has lasted (and I do a fair bit of towing a 1.4 tonne trailer) The one on my BX TZD needed changing every 120k miles and I'm sure I don't drive any differently these days.

I have to agree with the driving slower and being less stressed. When I was the skipper of the fishing boat we worked from Scrabster, right up on the very top of Scotland. It was nearly 200 miles of mixed quality single carriageway a roads with only about 10 miles of dual carriageway and some horrendous road up the A9 north of Inverness. Going like a bat out of hell coming home I did Scrabster to Buckie in 4 hours. I got stopped speeding one day on the way north, so on the way home I came up the hill from the harbour behind an artic bound for Peterhead. I followed it every inch of the way to buckie never overtook a thing, never cursed and swore at other traffic, never above 56 mph arrived in buckie in 4 hours 14 minutes no stress no panic and much fresher. Since then, and that was 15 years ago at least I have rarely driven faster than 60 mph, even on motorways, very rare I see them, and won't at all now that my sister has done a geographical to the Orkney Islands. Time to drive 200 miles to Scrabster and an hour on the ferry to travel 60 miles in a straight line [emoji49]

We have been going to the north of Scotland on holiday since the '70s, before the new A9 was built. Stayed at Bilbster between Wick and Thurso for 17 years, we now stay at Rogart. I use to always get over 50 mpg from my Citoren XM td estates, the 406 is giving me over 60 mpg. About three weeks ago we went to Yorkshire and averaged 70.7 mpg from Dorset to Weatherby and around 65 mpg for the whole trip of five days including some very steep hills. These are of course indicated speeds and mpg but its got to be somewhere up there.
