ZX starter motor

Post by gradeafailure »

mornin' all...
I've been having problems with my ZX starter, the same as those posted some time ago re. the solenoid not activating and having to tap the starter whilst turning the ignition key to get it to fire, and i saw the reply saying that it could be the brushes. Are these changeable at all? And how much of a job is it to change the starter - anything i should know before proceeding?
Cheers guys!

Morning Dave -
If this is the first starter you have to overhaul - I recommand you get a cheap s/h spare first.
I've NOT yet seen a startermotor not being serviceable.
Common parts replaced are the brushes - and the axle bronze bearings (bushings).
Replacing the brushes in most cases involves soldering with a heavy duty soldering iron - at least 75W.
The spares you need are available from any auto-electric specialist workshop. They would probably answer "huh ?" - if you ask for starter bits for your ZX. Instead you have to find the make and type of the starter - usually stamped on the body.
Note : It's important you ask for the right starter at your breakers - as the starter for a ZX14 won't fit a ZX16/19 or vice-versa.

Sorry about that Dave [:I]
Uhmmm - it is in fact that straightforward to remove the starter - that I did'nt even think about answering that Q [:I]
Could you please fill in your profile - signature field - your car model/year - as it's near impossible to remember which car model each member here in fact owns/drives [:)]
If it's a 14 engine (K1G - AX type) - the starter is to the rear of engine when standing in front of car. Otherwise the starter is on the front of the engine.
It's bolted to the gearbox flange - either 2 or 3 bolts. Usually 6mm hex insert headbolts.
May have a support bracket fitted at end of starter too.
If you have a radio code - save it - as the first task is to remove the battery leads - from both battery & starter.
