Xantia TD - Turbo whine?

Post by chinkostu »

The old girls always had a bit of a whistle to the turbo, however i took the inlet pipe off today and found oil sat in the connector to the inlet manifold itself. Is it possible my turbo's giving up the ghost? it still pulls perfectly well but the noise gives me cause for concern if anything going to blow up

As long as IC isn't half full of oil, it should be ok. If it does a runaway, be sure to post up a vid :-D

Oil in the inlet tract is normal, it's condensate from the crankcase breather... As Lexi say, as long as it's just a covering and not gallons it's fine... If the turbo was leaking that much you'd know by the smoke...

Whistles and noise from a turbo is often caused by tiny air leaks...

It is a pretty small amount, revved it with the pipe disconnected and didn't get oil fired everywhere so assume there isn't an IC jammed with oil!

Tried hunting for boost leaks but so far unsuccessful

they can be the very devil to find.... wet oil is often a good indicator... The rubber couplings on the turbo itself (the ones that are really hard to get to) are often the culprits....

Sometimes, going in through the wheelarch can help...

Any way it's jolly tricky sadly...

Look to see if there's any oil around them first.. If they are bone-dry they can be eliminated...

Perhaps that's what's up with mine.
On odd occasions recently the boost hasn't come in until around 2,000 revs and there is oil in the wells around the injectors - cleaned it all out when I did an oil and filter change a few weeks ago and saw yesterday that it is back. Not a huge amount and it looks to be coming from the induction pipework.
may need to dig the spanners out, wherever they may be :(

First time I took mine off I went through the wheel arch and the top. The jubilee clips heads were in impossible places. Now they've been put back facing outwards it's not to hard to get them off. Been so long since I fiddled with the car though I can't remember if I go through the wheel arch or bonnet now.
The place where my Xantia still loses air is the metal joint that the big air pipe attaches to. It's the one thats bolted on with 2 bolts that also hold the bracket for the air pipe. I tried instant gasket but it still leaks a bit. The tell tale if it's that is oil dripping onto the coolant hose across the top of the rocker cover.

The rubber joiner that goes between the metal inlet and plastic pipe? Had that off today and seemed gravy, no oil on the rocker thankfully

This is the bit I have trouble with.
ImageImage
It shows no washer on Service Citroen but mine was fitted with what looked like a melted plastic one. Doesn't seal without one at all. It's something I need to grab from the 306 to try, theres a nick in the flat bit on my Xantia.
No oil on rocker though, I doubt yours leaks Stu.

The 306/zx etc use a different inlet due to the top mounted IC by the way

Yes theres two different pipes.

First one is my car, no o ring. The second has an o ring but is for later cars. I guess I just assume everyones Xantia is the same as mine. You're dead right about the 306 being different, I don't know what I was thinking.
