C5 III X7 exhaust

Post by The Ace »

So I am considering for some time now to do *something* to the exhaust of my C5 1.6THP, because (a) I hate the non-existent downward-bending stock look, and (b) I was thinking about maybe "upgrading" it a bit.

However, the following facts were uncovered after searching for a couple of hours:
1) There are exactly ZERO aftermarket exhausts for the C5
2) There is also a VERY limited supply of exhaust tips that will look like the ones found on the 3.0 (whose's look I would like to copy). Only one I found online is this
3) I have managed to find a generic silencer that looks more or less like I want it to, but it's very hard to ascertain whether it will fit OK or not
4) The option of installing the stock exhaust tips from the 3.0V6 is out of the question, since it will cost around 250-260€ with personal labour.

Any other ideas, options or maybe DIY that someone in here did :?:

1) Naturally, since the regular bumper doesn't have the exhaust tip visible (obviously, the genuine twin one is specific)
2) Closer to the ones I've managed to find while I was looking
3) From the provided measurements I doubt it would fit, too long
4) I'm still in the works on mine, missing the left side exhaust tip (200€), but since I'm under some other projects I've put this on hold

Musketier tuning has some good exhausts tips (twin ones), but they're of course a bit pricey ... if you'd find a good mechanic/plastic guy, it should be fairly easy to modify the existing bumper in a way to cut some extra plastic to make room for any exhaust tip you want to just bolt on/weld on the existing exhaust ... unless you're looking for a twin pipe solution like the 3.0 engine, then you'd need another bumper, genuine or aftermarket one

I'm still undecided if I want to just add a tip (to get rid of the silly looking stock tip), or if I want to change the whole silencer (to add a bit of "vroom-vroom" and maybe a couple of horsies more when it's tuning-time). Adding just the tip retains the stock muffler (restrictive but very silent, in line with the "limo-type" of the C5), but installing a free-flowing muffler adds a bit of noise (but then, how much noice ?) and some performance (?). Obviously I'm not looking for a fake twin-pipe exhaust, won't fit and will cost an arm and a leg....

The thing is however, there are absolutely no products for either option, apart for those that I have already posted. And then there are the stock tips (210€ each plus the mounting kit, but I'll buy only the left one), which are too expensive for what they offer.

In any case, I'm trying to get that "stock-3.0V6-exhaust" look to fit the trapezoid cut-out of the stock bumper on the left side, I'm not interested in generic round/oval tips or mufflers.....that's why I'm asking around (and in here), just in case someone found a better solution....

I should think a small engineering firm could produce a tip to your own specification.
The silencer would be a different matter, though ,as it would have to be type-approved, and meet your local regulations.

If you consider the current bumper and the left side genuine exhaust tip, the final result would look like this (your current bumper doesn't have the mounting points for the mounting kit):

Obviously, not the 3.0 engine look, which is impossible without either modifying the stock bumper (cutting the plastic and reshaping it with some heat), or getting a 3.0 style bumper, but then you'd have a hole on the right side ... why not go for the new exhaust altogether (Remus, Walker, those are the brands that are available in my country, don't know which other brands exits, never searched for replacement exhausts) ... you'd get the look & sound with that ...

Damn, now that you've put the whole thing in a photo, it does look a bit ugly :( One more reason to NOT choose the stock 3.0 tip....

So I'm left with the original options: an aftermarket tip or a muffler (which will also need a nice-looking tip). You said that Remus and Walker have options for the 1.6 ? Do you happen to have any links ? I can't find anything for the X7 model from either brand...actually I can't find an aftermarket muffler for the X7 from ANY brand...

For further reference, this is how it looks like without modifying the bumper, or replacing it with the genuine twin-pipe one:

Completely forgot that I had opened this thread :D

Here's what I finally did, after searching (and searching, and searching...) for the trapezoid exhaust tailpipe similar to the ones on the 3.0. I decided it's not worth the hassle and wait and money, and found this tailpipe, which I think complements the rear end of the X7 quite nicely ;)

The usual place -eBay ;)

The one I bought http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/401055579692? ... EBIDX%3AIT
but there are a couple more sellers with almost identical tailpipes, I suspect these are all the same physical vendor....

Doesn't look like these will fit mine - just had a squiz on mine and it has the twin silencer pipes welded directly onto the rear box - so looks like that's a non-starter!

Mind you, I had to do some cutting to make this fit, I had to cut about 2cm off the end of the stock tailpipe....and not a vertical cut, kind of a diagonal one in order to get the angle just right. Since I hadn't measured anything beforehand, it was just by sheer luck that it finally settled in just the right spot ;)
