CX 2.5 turbo DIESEL safari 1986 running rough

This is driving me NUTS....engine starts fine, runs for around two minutes then starts running lumpy, similar to a petrol engine if the choke is left out. If i remove the return feed to the fuel tank and drain it to a catch can engine will run no problem. I have replaced complete return line to tank and there are no restrictions. Any ideas.....Anyone, before i book myself into rehab!

Blocked breather on the tank possibly - will it run if you take the filler cap off?

I would concur with Richard. I ran CX Safari diesels for about 15 years and probably a quarter of a million miles, brilliant cars.

Thanks for your suggestion, I think I've tried that but with no success, I'm running out of ideas now but am willing to try anything to get this back on the road.....Robert.

Just a footnote.....the car had been lowered onto something at sometime crushing the fuel tank, I thought that this had caused the return pipe in the tank to become blocked. I removed the tank, cut off the top of the tank, knocked out the dents, cleaning the tank out at the same time, then welding the top back on .....the result....no difference....I do really want to love my cx, but it's a love hate relationship at times like this!

Sounds like the suction is collapsing a pipe internally, or you have a floating blockage .....you can you back flush the pipe work with the pump and some clean fuel....
