Xantia gearknob problem.

Post by mirafioriman »

Next problem.....

My 1994 Xantia 1.9d gearknob has crumbled into pieces.

Question one, how do you remove it.

Question two, does anybody have a good one for sale?

Is that a T Handle with the side button like the XM one?

They are bad for crumbling away I believe.. Club-XM may hold the answer...

No it's a manual with a round knob.

Ahh, sorry! Just pull it straight up with a firm tug... It's held in with angled barbs on a serrated shaft..

In the act of removing it the barbs break and they cannot be refitted so do be aware of that when searching for a replacement...

Thanks. Maybe I should look for a full gearlever?

They're difficult to change as the exhaust needs to be dropped... Easier to get a replacement knob and work out a new method of tightly fixing it...

They do need to be well fixed as if they come off mid-gearchange it can be a bit dangerous!

My Ulysse did exactly the same thing recently :( you'd expect them to last longer, mines only a 97 :)

The 205 just pulls off, but goes back on tightly. The numbers on mine were so dirty, I pulled it off and put it through the dishwasher! It worked, immaculate now [emoji4]

I salvaged the nice wooden one from the VSX, cleaned, polished and fitted it to the 'Green Lady'. Both of them required considerable force (and wiggling) to pull off - be warned, the natural tendency is to sit in the driver's seat and pull up with both hands - with your face in the way when the barbs do let go

Fortunately, I sat in the passenger seat (pushed right back) and realised just in time what was likely to happen and kept my face well out of the line of fire; otherwise I might have broken my nose or jaw for a second time - both very painful for several weeks!

The wooden one has the same nylon insert as the original, so I just rammed it onto the naked, barbed, gear-lever. It's on very tight!

I can possibly 3d print new barbs. I haven't taken off a gear knob for years though and will need a picture because I've got naff all chance of getting one off my car at the moment.

As my current one is broken I might just break it into pieces. I have a wooden one from a later exclusive. Will that fit?
