XUD9 Timing belt change

Post by dannyboy84 »

Hi all picked up a cheap ZX 1.9d Estate car,my other ZX's rear beam is shot.I'm going to practice taking the timing belt off on the scrapper.Took it off then back on but belt is loose, now all out of sync. Now do I lock crank, then cam, then pump? Will this put timing correct again? I've took starter off to do this so easier to see locking hole. What do you guys use on the crank to lock,8mm does'nt seem to fit into flywheel?I've used 8mm bolts on pump and cam and thats all ok.
I'm just practicing on the scrapper before doing it on the new car.It has'nt been done for 9 years!!
Any help or tips appreciated. Sorry for all these questions.

Danny, to lock the flywheel I always use a bit of kunifer brake pipe. I think the hole is 6mm but it's very tight, hence the bit of brake pipe. Plus it's flexible to get behind the starter when in place..

8mm is fine for the cam and pump. Remember to sue both holes in the pump sprocket.

Danny, be careful when lining everything up that you don't damage anything with potential piston/valve kisses. Turn the crank and cam in gentle stages until all lines up and you can insert the lockers... It may take some patience and if the engine seems to go tight or clearly locks, rotate back and advance one before the other in gentle steps until it's all in time..

Lots of years ago I did cambelt on both BX TUD7 and on Xantia 2.1 and on both to lock the flywheel I used a 12" length of 6mm steel rod, nicely rounded on one end and bent with a 135* angle then 2" later back again with a similar bend. By using it from underneath the starter motor, I was able to find the hole in the flywheel.

A 6mm drill bit should also work. I use a length of 6mm Piano wire bent to the right shape to avoid taking the starter off.
I take it you've loosened and tightend back the tensioner pulley?
When all complete, turn the engine by means of the main crank pulley two full revolutions to make sure nothing is touching.

Thanks guys.I'm worried about the crank moving when I undo and re-tighten the crank pulley.I put in 5th and stand on brakes but haynes says you can get a tool to hold the flywheel teeth,I've found on auction site but it looks quite small for the job. How do you guys stop the crank moving when removing pulley?

Got your message CitroJim, no worries thanks for the reply.

Get the bolt loose before doing the timing. The pulley won't move.

Good luck mate, I'll follow your adventure with great interest.

I've only done one cambelt before (BMW 323i) & it was obvious that in way prepared me for this engine: frankly, I think it's impossible, despite what others (who are clearly more PSA-savvy than I) have said.

b-t-w; great lie about C15's is they're easy to fix - compared with what, one wonders (everything I've tackled - except oil & filter change & replacing sidelight bulbs - has been a nightmare)

Hi all.
Have finished the timing belt. Was careful and lined everything back up,locked it all, installed belt and made sure the slack was at the tensioner.
Turned by twice, checked again, then started engine and sweet as a nut!!
Many thanks to all of you,it has given me a real confidence boost now to replace the timing belt on my new car! I'm doing belt, tensioners, water pump, service and glow plugs. Any advice for how to re-fill coolant? What coolant do I need and mix ratio? Do you put normal water in with anti-freeze?Are gates timing belts ok?

Well done Danny.

Sorry, too late for you, but for the benefit of anyone else contemplating the job, I've posted this wiki page covering Timing Belt (aka Cam Belt) change. It's under Xantia, but is virtually the same for any XUD9 (1.7 or 1.9), whether Turbo-charged or NA, in any Citroen. Photos later.

One of the best! Many car makers use them as original equipment.
