Oil question

Unread post by DSNL »

Simple oil question.
In the book, Citroen recommend a synthetic oil for the 1.6 petrol. Is this really needed or is a good 0W/30 or 5W/30 just as good.

I don't think you will get an 0w30 oil that is not synthetic anyway.

Dohhhh
2011 C5 Estate 1.6thp petrol.
It has been a while since I was in the trade but at that time Ford did a 0w/30 mineral. I see now that most is synthetic.

Personally, I would follow what Citroën specify, especially as the 1.6hdi does not like old oil, changes MUST not be missed, if you do then turbo troubles could be ahead.
And, for a decent oil the prices are not that different between mineral and synthetic oils

Fully synthetic every time for me. More highly refined, better protection, quicker to circulate from cold so less friction damage. Longer engine life and generally better fuel consumption.

Given that the OP is talking about the 1.6l petrol engine (rated 120bhp) I'd be inclined to stick with Citroen's specified oil and use fully synthetic.

I imagine that engine in the C5 estate body is working pretty hard......

Any type of the correct grade/spec but half the change/new filter rates is the key. Synth or Semi ?, whichever.

Particularly for any engine that leads a hard life - lots of short journeys or being hammered.

Thanks guys. I can't believe how out of touch I am with this stuff.
The car does 15 miles each way to work. I drive easy and twice a year with the caravan .
Just bought oil for the first time in my life. (remember I worked for Ford for 16 yrs) HOW MUCH!!!!!!!

Not the worlds toughest engine. Prone to timing chain problems. This engine as far as I know is a joint production with BMW, used also in the mini and one series and in accordance with their love for chains has a timing chain. Their chain systems were never the greatest. Just look up the n47 diesel and you wild quickly appreciate how robust psa engines actually are. Bottom line:- use the recommended oil.

I reckon some of these little Morse chains are probably weaker than a good belt.
