Universal Symbols

Unread post by Old-Guy »

This has nothing to do with cars, but as we all use computers, I thought Forum members might find this useful. :)

Hunting for a particular symbol today that doesn't seem to be in any font installed on my laptop, I stumbled upon the Wikipedia Miscellaneous Symbols page:

"Miscellaneous Symbols is a Unicode block (U+2600–U+26FF) containing glyphs representing concepts from a variety of categories, astrological, astronomical, chess, dice, musical notation, political symbols, recycling, religious symbols, trigrams, warning signs, and weather, among others."

These symbols can be cut-and-pasted into almost any (Unicode compliant) font in almost any application (under Linux anyway :-D ).

A few examples:

? ? ? ? ?

I'm now going to find ? useful in French Car Wiki articles.
2012 Subaru Forester - capable but no magic carpet
2011 Grand C4 Picasso VTR+ 1.6HDi - not missed!
1995 Xantia Estate SX 1.9TD in Vert Vega "The Green Lady" - sadly missed
1998 Xantia 2.1 VXD Estate in Mauritius Blue - R.I.P. (terminal tin-worm)

Oddly enough I meandered through the Unicode weird symbols just yesterday, there are certainly an abundance of them.

ö ? ‡ † ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?? ? ?

Millions of them but may not be viewable if you don't have Unicode installed - some I posted were rejected as unsupported. (some of the best ones, naturally) :(
