Shower type heater.

Shower type heater.
I had one of these heaters on Xantia HDI , SX spec I think it was.
My LX C5 does not seem to have one? Is this the case? I don't want it anyway but need to check that it isn't hidden esewhere.
I am looking at bulkhead near heater matrix.

Re: Shower type heater.
I usually get it wrong whenever I post something about diesel Xantias, but the electric heater was only fitted with the winter pack (along with heated seats and heated windscreen washer nozzles), generally only to Exclusive trim vehicles and only to 1998 HDI cars, later cars had the Eberspächer diesel heater.
I have not heard of either type being fitted to UK C5s.

Re: Shower type heater.
The C5s do have an electric heater - uses glow plugs.
Haven't the foggiest where it is but the car would never warm up without it.

Re: Shower type heater.
OK guys. The Xantia that had this heater had side airbags on the front seats ,so was a high spec. This heater I speak of is like the inside of your shower or Gaggia coffee machine. Water goes in cold and comes out near boiling through the massive elements. like a double doughnut, size wise.
Glad I have none then as I part fried the last one on a coolant change. Started up after coolant change but water had not went into the element vessel.
I let some smoke out
So a coolant drain is just a straight forward operation on C5 LX.
I am working out my shedule for Cambelt/aux belt /w/p. t/stat etc etc change. I have to do it all 5 times in my mind now before I start
Steve: You have fancy SX spec ,so may have Eberspacher or Webasto. I have winddown rear windows........so maybe no fancy heater on mine?

I have left the Land Rover fold Ally, with the steak in tin foil on the manifold
I have checked the cooling section on Service CIT. Some of the eagle eyed might check for me. VIN is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Re: Shower type heater.
I would hardly call an SX 'fancy' but both of them have had the coolant heater fitted - although where they are fitted remains a mystery.lexi wrote:

Will have a look when I get chance.
I did think that they were present on the whole range of C5s though.

Re: Shower type heater.
Service.citroen doesn't appear to show one for the C5 (at all) - for the Xantia it's under electric unit>additional heating, but the only thing here on the C5 is the Webasto type thing. Which is probably why you've never found it Steve....

Re: Shower type heater.
Didn't even know my C5 had one until we were up in Scotland a few years ago, it was very cold and we left the cottage and went down a very long hill to the main road using no throttle and the heater was blowing hot when I got there although the gauge was still showing cold. No idea where it is though.

Re: Shower type heater.
I would doubt if my Webasto type heater would be working after all this time. Donk is 03 plate and those heaters are troublesome things on boats etc.
They burn on diesel as well. More complication. Did Jim not spend some time messing with one? Stuck under a wing somewhere.

Re: Shower type heater.
The Mk1 c5 has 3 X 300Watt heating elements fitted in at the heater matrix. They heat the air directly not the coolant. They switch on in 2 stages, first 600W then 300W. They are switched by the engine ECU and by the bm34. They are only used when both the outside temperature is below 10 degrees Celsius and the coolant is below 60 degrees. There is a relay box which switches them fitted between the battery and the wing.

Re: Shower type heater.
I think you mean some sort of immersion heater? 2 Devices are used dependant on market.
Thermoplungers (electrical elements) installed in the heater matrix coolant circuit
Additional fuel-driven heater in the left wing/arch

Re: Shower type heater.
No i meant exactly what i have written. The C5 (as supplied to the Irish and British market anyway) uses a direct electricity to air heater. The element is very similar in appearance to the element of an electric fan heater or to the rectangular element as used in some tumble dryer heaters. Perhaps other markets had other options and perhaps there were other options available here that i have not yet come across. The Xantia on the other hand can have one of a number of additional heater options. The most one i have seen on the xantia and synergie/808/ulysse vehicles is what i would call the night heater. These are similar to those used on ambulances and truck cab night heaters. They function as oil fired boilers heating the coolant.

Re: Shower type heater.
Many early HDi Xantias had the 'immersion heater' auxilliary heater consisting of four glowplugs in an alloy housing near the heater matrix joint to counteract the effects of a supremely efficient engine that took ages to warm up in the winter...
These heaters, on the Exclusive trim models, were superceeded by the diesel burning Eberspacher heater that was inded a little 3Kw oil-fired boiler. It lived under the nearside front wing and sounded like a little jet engine when in operation...
They were wonderful things but few work now due to duff igniter glowplugs and seized fan motor bearings... Both problems can be fixed...
I had on on my old HDi Xantia and loved it... Mine worked after fixing it...
I'm not aware any C5 model having these oil-fired boilers fitted...

Thanks for all the input guys in covering the many heaters. The one described by BX will be mine..........and sounds the least problematic.
