2.0 HDi Xantia high speed power loss but fine round town

Post by Skull »

Only been on one high speed run with my latest Xantia (since scrapping the 2.1TD) was running fine on a run over to Whitby but on a whim I headed out for the Yorkshire Moors ... heard what I can only describe as a bit of a clunk and was immediately accompanied by the orange engine management/fuel injection light ... Stopped and checked for anything obvious but nothing apparent, so decided to nurse her home. She made it home OK but struggled in the 40 - 60 mph range especially if on an incline and since then I've had her on the ramps but nothing obviously broken, turbo appears OK (no smoke) and I can see the turbo arm moving when revved.

I am currently using it as normal around town and there is no noticeable difference from 'normal' with the exception that the orange warning light is on ... I don't have a Lexia and wouldn't know how to use one

Any suggestions / local Lexia guru / :?:

If your cars not smoking from the rear since orange light then that possibly rules out MAF sensor, clunk could be worn gearbox/engine mount or drop link, forum member also mentions caliper pins and shim to make sure they are in place as they cause same issue.

Sounds like an air pipe popped off if you're struggling to get 70mph now.

Thanks for those suggestions elma /xantiagreen

Just to confirm the 'clunk' hasn't re-occurred and my initial thoughts were it was something failing or falling off but I never heard it bounce under the car and can't see anything missing.

The air pipes for the EGR to turbo / cam and the air intake all appear OK.

Like I said to drive it around town the power feels OK it just has the orange engine warning light on ....

The air pipes might appear OK Skull but they are prone to very small hidden splits that only reveal themselves under pressure... I know this from experience. I had an HDi with a minor boost leak and the cause was a tiny split/crack that could only be found when the hose was doubled-back on itself.

Also, the little stub-hose between the turbo outlet and the plastic pipe under the engine is prone to splitting. Check too that plastic pipe for pinholes from road contact..

The clunk is almost certainly the rubber bush in the engine torque reaction arm mount on the inner wing...

Yes my guess would be the short hose on the bottom of the turbo has popped.

CitroJim

The air pipe from EGR to turbo is attached, the turbo arm moves when engine is revved, the plastic turbo intake pipe and rubber connector are all tight and sound with no splits or holes (removed cleaned and inspected as it was covered in old oil from the sump weeping), and just to confirm the clunk is not re-occurring it was a one-off clunk that happened just before the orange engine light came on.

RichardW I have presumed you mean the same rubber connector hose from plastic turbo pipe to the actual turbo.

Symptom
No smoke from exhaust, no strange noises, turbo arm moves when engine revved, engine runs fine around town but at higher speeds @ 50 mph lacks power and orange engine warning light on constantly apart from one blink on start-up.

Is yours a 110? My only other thought is that the intercooler expired.

Got to be worth a check. I can't think what else would go with a pop, unless you drove over something at exactly the same time.

Is the intercooler fluid filled :?: Nothing leaking underneath when I stopped

I kind of take the intercooler for granted

No it's air filled, compressed air from a turbo is hot so gets cooled in the intercooler.
If it's gone with a pop you should be able to see any damage.
If any airs getting out theres your lost power. Should smoke though with a duff intercooler but they (well xuds anyway) don't always seem to.

Does the Xantia ECU have a restricted performance mode? Is the engine management light still on? My Jaguar goes into restricted performance when the EML comes on and won't go over 2500rpm.

Addendum
This thread http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... =3&t=53246" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; suggests the Xantia does have a Limp Home/ Restricted Performance mode. Getting your codes read might point you in the right driection
