MyTimingBelt.com

Post by xantiagreen »

Just had a wander round this site and obviously searched the xantia hdi and the site informs change at 100k or 10 years. One less bill for the next 4 or so years if it's reliable info.

That's the recommended interval but it's better to do them more frequently for peace of mind... The HDi is a VERY easy belt to do.

I tend to be very conservative with timing belts and I'd do it at half that interval personally...

No, that's not right.... I can't recall exactly but 60K I believe...

In case of low mileage I believe timing belts should be replaced on a time basis like tyres - 5 year intervals?

Just remember unless you have had the car since brand new you can never be 100% that its not been clocked, the car may have an extra 30k miles on it you dont know about. I always do a timing belt on any car i get regardless of milage, age or history.

In the days when I had a Xantia I recall the interval being 72K (54K in poor conditions) or every five years.

I replaced the original belt on our 1.9TD (different but very similar engine) very shortly after buying her at 11 years and 67,000 miles. Showed it to my mechanic friend (another Jim!), "You were bloody lucky, I've never seen an unbroken belt that bad!" and he's done many hundreds. His firm suggest that, regardless of make or engine, it's wise to replace belts at 5 years or 50,000 miles; as part of a pre-sale service they always replace belts not known to be well under this.

The service book for my Xantia states 10 years or 72,000 miles - probably why the first owner sold her after her local Citroen agent told her how much they'd charge for belt, and tensioners plus a set of spheres, flush and LHM (probably more than I paid for the car!).

Also be aware that things like water pump, crankshaft pulley and tensioners all need inspecting at the same time. If O.K. at 100,000 miles, it's expecting far too much for them to still be OK in another 10 years or 100,000 miles.

A failed belt, pulley or tensioner will cause a lot of expensive damage that may cost more than the car!

My 110 hdi was changed at 72k before I bought it receipt says:

5.8 hrs at £35 labour £233.45
cambelt kit £63.10
water pump £23.29
red anti-freeze 4L £19.55
front pads £34.21 Total £373.60 inc vat at 15% carried out on 29/10/2009, is that a reasonable price for the work. Carried out by a company in Wolverton Milton Keynes.

This was done 29/10/2009 at 72k, cars now on 116700 and 6 years since change. I guess I will have to start saving for the cambelt and hopefully get it done for start of next year. Does the C8 hdi have the same engine as the xantia hdi, spoke to mechanic today about C8's and he mentioned the belts erode and snap prematurely due to water ingress.

Next car I buy I'm gonna try my best to recover cambelt fitted cost if they can't show it's been done at required intervals....

Are you local to these parts then?

I don't live far from Wolverton...

For round these parts, that's not a bad price... Who did it. There's one garage in Wolverton I'd not trust with a pedal car, let alone a cambelt

Did the one on my Xantia HDi at 110k / 11 years.... it didn't look bad, but it ran better afterwards, and I wasn't petrified it was going to break every time I went out in it!

1.6 HDi is 10 years / 150k....did the C4 Picasso at 75k as it was noisy (many seem to go this way). 307 is on 104k / 8 years on the original belt....must get round to changing it [-o<

I think saying the 2.0 HDi is VERY easy is pushing it a bit Jim.... 1.6 Hdi on the other hand.... 8-)

OK, a fair cop Richard :-D I'll withdraw the word VERY then

I also found the 2.0 16v HDi a pretty straightforward belt to do too, just as long as you're very careful not to rotate the engine backwards...
