2.0hdi low pressure pump
Can anyone think of or know a bodge temporary fix to get the car running after the low pressure pump has failed in the tank. I know they're not too difficult to change having done one before, but the car is a long way from home and just wondered if anyone has any ideas :-/

Hi Ken,
Often a good bash on the top of the tank can get a reluctant pump to start up...

Re: 2.0hdi low pressure pump
Hi Ken,
I've no idea how to sort a temporary bodge - as I understand it, the main injection pump on an HDI needs to receive fuel from the tank under a little pressure. Maybe some member isn't living too far away from you, or the vehicle, if you needed a bit of help. Any location?
(PS. just seen CitroJim's post - had assumed you'd already given it a good thrashing!)

Re: 2.0hdi low pressure pump
You could fit an aftermarket external pump.

Re: 2.0hdi low pressure pump
Thanks for the ideas It's not my car, it's one I'd like to buy. It's going cheap enough but it's so far from home it's in Gillingham Dorset, the colour I've always wanted as well Once home I reckon I could fit a new one in a couple of hours.

Re: 2.0hdi low pressure pump
How about taking a new pump & seal with you ? you only need a hammer & blunt screwdriver to change it. Very easy job & could be done by an average DIYer in under an hour. If you are changing it I would advise not attempting it unless there is less than half a tank of fuel in the tank, If the tank is too full there is a risk of the tank distorting & you cant get the ring back on.
If I remember right the official repair time is only 0.5 hours

Re: 2.0hdi low pressure pump
Yep about 30 mins to change, given that people don't normally sell cars with full tanks as long as its less than 1/2 full it should be easy (had to do one with the tank full and that's much less fun). If you don't fill the tank then the seal not being 100% is less important so you could get it home and then spend the time getting it sealed properly if you need to.

Re: 2.0hdi low pressure pump
Not sure you guys are familiar with which car this is for. It's a 2.0ltr Synergie. The tank has to be dropped at least one side down to access the pump/fuel gauge as there's no access from within the car. I've done it before and reckon about 2 hours here on the drive, but jacks, axle stands or ramps are needed. Given the distance from home I don't fancy that as an option.

Re: 2.0hdi low pressure pump
I'd take a 20Litre jerry can and use the pump Peter recommended to get it home if I wanted the car. Should be quick and easy to plumb in and then can effect a proper repair at home. Jims suggestion of hitting it is worth a bash as well.

Re: 2.0hdi low pressure pump
Your sure its the only problem ?....I could talk to Phil for you/arrange for him to meet you there/pick it up on his flatbed and change the pump in his Garage 15mins away ?
He is a Citroen guys so will know the method.
Or call Him, say Alasdair (the cast iron radiator guy) suggested you call him, and arrange the meet yourself.

No, I'm not sure it's the only problem. I only have the sellers word for it, but thanks for your help and sugestions. I'm waiting to hear back from the seller at the mo.
