Hello
I don't have the factory fitted roof bars
and would like to add some
anybody know if this is possible
I can't see any fitting points on the roof
are these hidden under the trim or something
cheers

You'll need the rails that sit in the roof as well.
Do you have the bars?

Under the rubber trim you will find a series of m6 threaded pillars. The transverse roof bars which are used to mount roof boxes etc grab into channel section s which are screwed to these pillars. If these are not fitted to your car then the options open to you are probably either search breakers yards or get a local engineering outfit to fold 2 pieces of light galvanised metal to do the job.

Re: citroen synergie 2.0 hdi slx 2001 roof bars
I have one with no roof tracks, a lot depends on what you want to carry.
If you open the tailgate you will see the black track infill strips bend round the rear of the roof and have a fixing screw/stud, don't recall which. Remove and slide the infill strips out toward s the back of the car. That reveals 3 or so M6 threaded holes on each side, which are used to fit the accessory tracks on the ones that have them. Tracks were around £200 when you could get them, may have been standard on the top models. Almost full length inverted shallow flattened C section with the open end pointing up. Custom roof rack feet slipped in, could be adjusted back and forwards and tightened with a clamp. You might get some off a scrapped VSX model, upmarket Peugeot 806 or a Fiat Useless.
This odd review of an 806 shows the roof rack towards the end. " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I cut 4 short angle sections, each about 4" * 1.25" of 1/8" aluminium, with an M6 hole drilled on one side and a slot on the other. Mark on the roof the position of the holes you want to use, slide the cover strips back in and drill it in the right places. To fit the angle pieces, I used stainless M6 allen set screws with a spring washer.
(if you want to remove the angle pieces later you can just put black blanking plugs in the holes, nobody will think you have desecrated a Synergie - I painted them black and leave them in place).
You can also fit a roof rack, drill the foot of an old one and fit with the 6mm set screw and you have transverse bars. Common sense will tell you if its secure.
I mainly use it to carry surfboards*, a bungee across the roof with a section of cheap foam rubber pipe insulation around it, 2 boards on top, then strap down with luggage straps. OK for ladders too. See photo, look to right hand side to see the bit fitted to car. ,
(*an aside, if you take the middle seat out of row 2 and no row 3, the armrests pop out easily and you can take 2 surfboards or a large stepladder inside, on edge up the middle of the van)

Re: citroen synergie 2.0 hdi slx 2001 roof bars
thanks mate , it so much clearer now I thought they were raised loop sections. I mainly want to add a roof box so that I can carry camping equipment instead of putting it inside the car. I lifted the strip this morning and it had six m6 pillars about a foot apart on each side. I will try and source a scrap rail but i am happy to do a diy option. I think I will just take a standard roof bar and drill out the foot and attach it to the roof or take a long aluminium strip the length of the roof drill out a set of holes and drop it into the recess bolt it down and use that to mount the feet on for extra strength or even take another set of roof rails that fit inside channel and drill and mount them.
thanks for the detailed information much appreciated.
best regards

Re: citroen synergie 2.0 hdi slx 2001 roof bars
Sounds like your solutions will work, there is a slight vertical curvature front to back so a solid bar might be hard to fit. My plan B was to drill through 2 old transverse bars, add a spacer of some sort underneath in 2 or 3 places (each side) and bolt through into the M6 sockets, that gives you longitudinal roof rails that you can clamp just about anything to. They could probably stay on, not much drag or wind noise with rails.add a roof box so that I can carry camping equipment instead of putting it inside the car
I vaguely recall that the proper Citroen roof bars (that slotted into the channel) came in high rise and low rise version, depending on sunroof. If yours has sunroof x 2, don't forget that one is pop up and the slider has an automatic pop up spoiler at the front, so check clearances.
We used to camp, with a big tent and (to my mind) far too much "stuff". With 4 people and just 4 seats in I never felt the need for more space, but I guess a roof box is good to pack wet and muddy tents and the like. If you are planning a trip to France, Synergie is 1.71 m high to start with so a roof box will push you well over 2m - you might pay more on autoroutes (my roofbox on a C5 tourer gets me in at 1.97 so just OK). Being over 2m keeps you out of lots of urban car parks.
Camping thoughts. Row 2 or 3 seats, removed and with the legs sprung down again are excellent armchairs to sit in the sun with book and glass of ale. I use mine at home in the garden sometimes. If yours has swivel front seats a pair in row 3 and the fronts turned gives you a good living room for rainy days. If you put fuse 16a (in the box behind the glovebox) in the correct slot the rear 12v socket becomes 'always live' rather than on the ignition switch so you can plug in a long lead and light which is handy in a tent in dead of night.
It would be good to see what you come up with.
