V6 Sump Plugs

When I bought a new sump plug when I did the service last time I ended up with a sump plug like every other sump plug you find for the part number for the car:

And it seems the genuine part is like this too.

However the sump plug that was on the car at the time (and I decided to keep it - and just replace the washer) looks very similar to this one (it has a square bit in the centre like the above ones though).

However I have no idea how old that plug is so would like to replace it with a new one exactly the same. if I remember correctly, the bit for the centre uses a smaller ratchet than the socket I have for turning the outside, so is easier to get the leverage.

Ben, I never replace sump plugs but do replace the copper washer on each oil change...

To this end I bought a bulk supply of washers from ebay a while back..

The plug itself should never wear nor ever need replacing...

Ah, Awesome Jim, thanks. I shall see if I can pick up another washer then, this was the set I bought last time:


that time I opted for the one with the rubbery bit to it, as felt that should give a better seal and help prevent leakage more so than the copper one. Would you recommend just getting the standard copper ones then? (I think the daughter ran off with the copper one as a "ring", so unlikely I still have it around!)

The ''rubbery one' should be reusable, as long as the rubber is not split.

I bought a heap of Dowty seals when I couldn't get a washer at short notice. Never can find them when I need them despite them being strategically placed.
Last time I changed the oil, I naturally found the washer on the ground after I'd filled up with oil and replaced all the filters.
Doesn't leak though

The "german metric" is kinda throwing me. Will probably take ages to get through 10, but it's about the equivalent of ordering 3-4 of them. And at least having a few more about might make them a little bit easier to find (although in Steve's case it doesn't seem true )

Like most things I find them just after it is too late. First time it was in the ashtray along with about fifty quids worth of change.

Invented and presumably patented by the company of the same name. The Dowty Group was yet another innovative engineering group taken over and asset-stripped in the 1990s.
