205 gti speedo cable

Post by daviemck2006 »

Can anyone look up the part number for a speedo cable for a 1990 205 gti please? The car is not here so I can't look at it, but I probably can lay my hands on the v5 if you need a chassis number. Thanks.

There are only two from 1988 on shown on service box, 6123.C4.....890 long and 6123.C5........1100 long. so I presume the longest one is RHD.

I can only see ones for a 1.4 and 1.1 on ebay. They say either 890 or 900 mm so presume they are the same ones. Do you know if the 1.1, 1.4, and the 1.6 gti are the same? I expect they are as the gearboxes are interchangeable, just different internal ratios.

1.1 & 1.4 205`s have MA gearboxes and TU engines and are completely different to 205 GTi`s,they have BE3 gearboxes and XU engines. 1.6 & 1.9 GTi boxes are the same, just have different internal ratios. As I said, there are only two shown on Peugeot Service Box for the BE3 box,so the longer one must be a RHD one,so use that part number.Have you tried a Peugeot Dealer? you never know that cable may be still available.??
I`ve never used Ebay,if the part turns up and its wrong you have hassle. With old specialist parts like this I`ve always used a Peugeot Specialist. Why not try Dean Hunter at http://www.peugeotparts.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; it will cost you more but you will get the correct part delivered to your door the next day.

I`ve just noticed your family`s list of cars. You say your son`s 205 1.6GTi has a 1.9 carburettor?????? whats that???? 1.6 &1.9 GTi`s have multipiont fuel injection engines and dont have carbs.
Unless its a specialy modified race spec` job with twin webbers etc.

Yes, the 1.6 engine threw off the cog on the end of the camshaft a few months ago which bent a few valves, broke the camshaft, cracked pistons so he went for a change of engine. The only one he could get locally was a 1.9 that had been modified for rallying with carbs, and had only done a few rallies since being rebuilt. It had a welded up diff so he married the engine onto his own gearbox, with new clutch, timing belt waterpump and then dropped it into his 1.6. It has taken a while to get it going due mainly to the chief mechanic smashing his collar bone after coming off his bike. It is now running but the mot is out so that's next on the agenda. I don't know why he needs a speedo cable as he reused his own gearbox. I don't even know if a speedo has to work for an mot, or if you can get away with a sat nav which tells your speed! It's been left up to them to get it going with very occasional help from me.

Blimey I bet thats a little screamer?? With all that work and modifications I would just check that its been connected up correctly? The fitting to the speedo head is very awkward and can easily come off. A speedo is NOT part of a MOT test. The tester does not drive the car,all he does is type the mileage on the clock onto the certificate.
I think there may be something in law that says cars must have an accurate working speedo. How on earth though could you be found out? take Mr Plod for a test drive?

I've not driven it yet. I'll probably get the job of taking it for its mot some day soon. I shall spill the beans on how it goes once I drive it
