Recon Steering Rack C5 2008 onwards

Post by Mikep511 »

Hi looking for suggestions re getting a recon steering rack for my C5 newer model 2.0 hdi exclusive

Got a quote for a new one almost £1000 gulp!!!!!

Seen some suppliers offering recon units at very reasonable price and was hoping someone would have knowledge of a reputable one to go to?

Looked at Livingston Autoparts , The Steering Specialist on eBay and Steering Direct - anyone any thoughts on these or a good alternative?

I prob need to get replacement sent up prior to sending my old one back so fully expect to pay a refundable surcharge

Thanks in advance

Mike P

Update

This problem has also affected the suspension - as the car is stuck in a low position, I know this will be to do with the shared fluid but at what point would the pump stop raising or lowering the car as it will not change height now. The garage who diagnosed the problem allegedly topped up the LDS fluid by 2 litre which I thought would have allowed the suspension two operate properly and stop the suspension warning message - what is the capacity of the LDS reservoir?

Thanks again

Ouch! That's unfortunate, needing a new rack on such a relatively young car... You have my sympathies!
Do GSF sell reconditioned racks? Or try. Malcolm Lockwood? Both of those should source decent parts.

It's a common fault on 2008/9 C5X7s to have a steering rack oil leak. And the bad news is that Citroen won't sell the leaking O-rings. Apparently an exchange unit is the way to go.

HI Mike,
When my rack went on my 59 plate C5 Tourer I called Livingstons and once I gave them my registration the reply was something like '...ahh one of those racks...we don't have any in stock, nor do our suppliers and we have 3-5 enquiries a week for them...!' I then contacted my local Indy who removed the rack and sent it to Coventry Power Steering who turned it around for about £150 (plus the Indy cost of removal and refitting) and so far all's good. The weak point, so I've been told by CPS, is that Citroen ('s rack suppliers) don't plate/paint/protect the input shaft from the steering wheel which rusts and then the rust screws up the top seal causing the fluid to run out of the top and down the pinion housing which makes it look like the pipe seal has gone (well it did on mine anyway!). From what I was told, CPS had to manufacture a new shaft...! how true that is I don't know...

HTH

Hi,

Big thanks to all for the advice and replies etc 8-)

Just found out from my local mechanic that there are two types of steering rack for my car - Without getting the mechanic to do an inspection, is there an easy way to find out which one I need to order for my car - which is a C5 November 2008 (newer model) 2 litre hdi Tourer Exclusive .

Thanks again

I would post up the last 8 digits of your VIN, and somebody with access to the Citroen system will be able to find out what your car was wearing when it left the factory.

I have fitted two of these racks so far, both times I used a new Citroen unit, as there was no refurbed units about.
I think it may be that one rack is for the fluid suspension car & the other for sprung cars.
I may get the unit I have refurbed. It is definitely rust on the upper part of the input shaft that causes the issue.
A bit of wax oil would probably prevent the issue from occurring.
Oh and yes they are £1000 ,

Thanks very much for the drawing - very helpful indeed !!

Just one final question - what do I actually need to order (crossed fingers for a recon option!!) I assume it is all the parts shown in the top drawing and are the part numbers the ones in the left hand box next to each part ie steering gear assy number 4001 65 Also any difference in the part nos if it for left or right hand drive - sorry to be asking so much questions but just want to make sure I order the correct parts.

Thanks again

Hi
Still struggling to find a steering rack at a decent price !

Have looked at Rock Auto as suggested above by Iain - and they have one made by Remy part no/desc. DSR 1268 - this is apparently only compatible with Citroen C5 Model Series: (RC_) or (RE_) without appearing to be too ignorant is this going to be compatible with my car? As don't wont to order it and have to mess about with returns/refunds etc.etc.

Thanks in advance
