Fuel filter drain plug leak

Post by matthlock »

My Xsara Picasso 2.0 DCi has developed a diesel leak from the drain plug on the fuel filter housing - I think the washer was damaged the last time I tried bleeding the fuel during a filter change. The scrap yard wants £30 for a replacement but I'm reluctant to pay that ias it's just a washer! For the moment I have attempted to seal the drain hole and thread with silicon but not confident that this will do the job indefinitely. Do I need a replacement housing unit or can I just by a new washer (or washer and bolt)?

It's an 03 Xsara Picasso 2.0 diesel.

Wrap some PTFE tape round the thread, you need enough so its a fairly tight fit, probably 10 turns or more. The previous owner of my 406 stripped the thread on the sump plug, every time I change the oil I use PTFE tape and it screws up tight enough and never leaks, I have done 50,000 miles like that.

silicone will deteriorate rapidly with diesel exposure you could use polyeurethane i.e {tiger seal} but this part is supposed to come apart so as to remove water from the diesel filter housing so probably not a good idea. you just need to get the washer matched up.

All it needs is a small "O" ring.
I have had a box like this for years, its got me out of trouble on lots of jobs even in the house. If you dont want to fork out for the kit I`m sure your local garage will have one.

Pound shops sometimes have boxes of assorted 'o' rings, fibre washers etc, and may well include something suitable.
