What's This?
Been servicing the C5 and while cleaning around a bit took this photo.
Been meaning to ask for the past five or six years.
Main reason for asking is that the vacuum pipe to it is quite loose and may be responsible for the somewhat questionable performance and dire economy.

Went through the MOT the day before yesterday and needed new droplinks - VOSA have been nosing around the MOT stations locally so I think they were obliged to find something that needed attention and the dust covers were a bit shabby.
Wondered what the shiny bits were when I crawled under the car to drain the oil, forgotten all about them.

Its the EGR throttle butterfly (sometimes known as the air dosuer). Is assists the EGR valve by strangling the incoming air. You can leave it disconected with the pipe plugged no problem, mines has been disconnected along with the EGR valve since the day i got it.

Thanks wheeler, presumed it was something of that nature. One day I'll locate, remove and clean the EGR. Not today though

Like so many things that don't seem urgent Mike. Round Tuits are hard to come by these daysNortherner wrote:Slipped your mind eh ... for 5-6 YEARS [emoji42] [emoji42] [emoji42]myglaren wrote:What's This?

I have a £300 Harmon/Kardon sub sat system, bass pot went on it so it was all or nothing. Nothing was very weedy and all had the neighbours running for cover.
I bought a Creative replacement and set the HK to one side.
When my youngest grandson was three months old we took him for a checkup to the RVI where he was born and called in to Aitken Brothers on High Bridge for a replacement pot - which is on the shelf over the computer and has been for almost 11 years -- it's his 11th birthday in a couple of weeks.
It will likely stay there as the Creative was replaced with a 'proper' H/K + Jamo stereo system when I discovered Jackie Evancho.
It's kind of a Zen approach. Leave it long enough and you find it didn't need doing anyway.
Re: What's This?
If you're getting dire economy, i presume you've changed your maf or cleaned your old one? EGR valves do fill up with crud, i'm not sure if they appear on a lexia like the egr valve?

Re: What's This?
Yep, new MAF when I bought the car and all the pipes and EGR cleaned plus new intercooler. Made a phenomenal difference and it is now about the same as the estate it replaced. It is actually improving on mpg, up from 32mpg to around 44 now. The estate was always 32~36mpg and had had the same treatment.
Many short trips don't do it any favours. I was hoping the loose pipe might give a miracle cure if fixed.
