C5 rear hydraulic cylinder

Post by THELABMAN »

Hi Folk,

It looks as if my days of Citroen ownership may be drawing to a close .. my O/S/R hydraulic cylinder decided to spring a leak and there are no parts in the country with orders from the factory not expected to begin delivery before at least July 27th .... I contacted a few online breakers with enquiries regarding 2nd hand parts yet nobody has replied back.

To be honested as the leaks due to corrosion I'm loathe to spend money on a 2nd hand one anyway, average price seems to be around £60, Citroen are quoting around £160 for a new one... so as I need transport for work I'm afraid I'm off out today to look at Skoda Octavia.

By cylinder do you mean the mushroom shaped sphere? Or the ram that the sphere is connected to?

When I was at Wokingham Car Spares last Tuesday they had 2 C5 saloons of the version you have. It could be worth giving them a call;

It's the ram that the sphere attaches to that's gone .... as the leak is dud to corrosion I'm scared of buying a 2nd hand part as it could go at any time acted fitting it .... I've nothing against 2nd hand parts but this just seems to much of a risk.

Exactly where is it leaking from on the ram? Is it a horrible torrent of LDS or a drip?

Seems odd to have failed seeing as many go million miles without a hitch

They leak from the mating face between the sphere and hydraulic ram/cylinder due to corrosion which is the main reason I'd not chance buying 2nd hand...

I'm not sure when the leak started as I'd not noticed anything on my driveway but one of the girls at work came in and said I'd a pool of oil running out from under my car and if was dripping out at an alarming rate..

I've bought a Skoda Octavia diesel to replace it as with the lack of any spares in the UK and on back order from the factory I needed a car for work so the C5 is parked up the side of the house to I decide wether to just scrap it or break it for spares

I am looking for at least one steel wheel for my C5. Anything else that is decent may interest me if you break her.

Hi Lexi, if you want the spare wheel off her you're more than welcome to it, not sure what it's worth.. it's got an almost new Michelin 195/65/15 tyre on it that I've only used 2 or 3 times in the years I've had her when I've had a puncture and it's never been on more than a day or two at time before the tyres been fixed or replaced .. I'm guessing the tyres maybe the original as the wheels like new so it us 12 years old.

Is that not the leak that Chris Morwood fixed using a dowty washer? On different car but same idea. Could be wrong but worth a forum search.

Yep.....a £3.00 seal and some simple machining or free with some very careful file work from what I gathered. // but is the car worth the time/strip-down expense ? to many people no.

The C5 Mk1 will be very rare very soon as it has now well and truly entered the "death zone" of low value/running cost/parts cost/ugly-as-a-moose/NFP
