Anyone shed some light on the year they changed the gearshift pattern on these ?
Early ones (ML5T ?) had reverse 'right-and-back'; later ones (ML5C ?) are 'left-and-up' with lift release ring under the gear knob
Believe the early type are 20LE94, and later type 20LM23 - is this correct.
Wanna fit one into my van to get better gearing, but need to make sure I have the correct gearhift pattern to match ...

Re: C5 HDi ML5 gearbox
While I cannot give an exact date, my 04 reg C5 HDi estate (registered in June 2004) has the left/lift gearbox.

Re: C5 HDi ML5 gearbox
My 02 had the right and back and my 04 has the left and forward, not sure of the exact timing of the change, the later one has three cables from the lever to the box whereas the early one has only two.
Had a look at the parts list and it isn't simple, looking at the levers it seems that only for a short time did they fit the 'to the left and forward' set up (with three cables), from RPO number 09856 to 09989, the from RPO number 09990 it returned to the two cable set up which would suggest to the right and back, that's for the ML5C boxes, the BE4R boxes all had two cables.
I have a feeling it was more to do with the availability of gearboxes than to design.

Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.
Re: C5 HDi ML5 gearbox
Thanks. Looks like the change over was during 2002 then. I have seen 02 models with the later pattern.
Anyone shed some light on the gearbox codes?
