Xantia SX Juddering steering wheel...

Post by RobCeaseFire »

Hi All.
I have recently bought a Xantia SX HDI 110. Mileage about 125K, which is good, and there is no writing on the back which I love! I'm told it will need a new gear box so I will put a new clutch in as well. Until then, I have some problems with steering unfortunately. I have changed the high pressure pump and rear anti-sink sphere that were giving me problems. I have recently emptied the reservoir, cleaned the LHM filters and refilled with an approved flush for 1K miles. I have done 150 miles so far. It may be a tiny bit better, but I still get this aggressive juddering when when I turn the steering wheel. (Mainly when parking). It does happen both ways, but is much more prominent right hand down. Should I just wait for the flush to work? Or does somebody know exactly what it is? Is there a nice simple cure for it like perhaps turning a bolt a 1/4 of a turn?
Cheers All

Sounds like air in the system. Try jacking the front up and turning lock to lock

A bit more back-story might be useful... What caused you to replace the pump and anti-sink sphere? Was the steering symptom present before this?

I went through all of the scenarios in my head when my Xantia steering felt intermittently stiff, pumps, racks filters, it turned out to be the lower steering column U/J needing some lubrication, awkward to apply but that was the problem.

Thanx y'all for your replies.

The steering judder was slightly present when I bought the car. Seller said he had flushed it and it was tight in the cold winter. Soon after buying the car I noticed it begin to sink quicker and quicker at the back, and then also the front. I replaced the anti-sink sphere from my donor car, but although not as bad, it still sank. I began to think it may all be pump related, the pump noise was not normal as well, then I found a leak in the main pump to reservoir tube. Again I replaced the good pump from the donor car and sorted the tube out. It does not sink much at all now and the high/low suspension works much quicker and better. Then I drained the reservoir, cleaned the dirty filters and added the flush. I was hoping that all the problems would disappear. Although slightly better, Mr judder is still hanging on the steering.

I will try jacking up the car and turn lock to lock, there could be some air in the system.

The lower steering column U/J needing some lubrication sounds like a definite possibility as well. Will have a go at that too.

Cheers, Appreciate the feedback guys!

Let you know what happens

You will need to switch back to normal LHM by 3,000 miles, as Hydraflush is not as 'greasy' as LHM, and things could start binding if it is left in for too long.

I tend to agree with Stewart's suggestion of a binding U/J at the bottom of the steering column, turn the wheel lock to lock left or right and if you find it gets stiff when the wheel is in a certain position then it's all but certain to be the U/J.

Thanx peoples.

Will check all of the above. May be a bit slow as on treatment for an illness. Love to work on the car though.

Rob if you still around go check the flexible power steering hose near the regulator and change it. It probably swell up(internally damaged) and if you dan't change it it will burst!

Hiya, there's one way to eliminate the universal joint problem and that is to simply turn the steering lock to lock with the front wheels raised off the ground using axle stands under the front subframe points while the engine is off.

If the UJs are binding you will get the horrible notchy steering even with the HP pump off.

I suspect it might be caused by the HP pump having a failed piston or one that will not prime. I had similar symptoms on a BX (5 piston pump) and there was a pulsing to the steering action in both directions that was caused by the HP pump having one of its pistons not delivering pressure so is caused a pulse in the steering supply for every revolution of the pump (half the engine rpm). A late Xantia with an HDi engine will have a twin output HP pump with a 5 piston supply for the PAS and a 2 piston supply for the hydraulic circuit. I think a bad pressure supply from the 5 piston to PAS pump will be affected by one or more of the pump pistons not supplying. It might be caused by the HP pump suction pipe sucking in air after the replacement.

Worth considering!

I've had two Xantia's and both had that joint problem. Maybe salty winter roads "help" also with that problem.
