citroen relay timing issue

hi guys,
in need of help/advice.. I've owned my 2.2hdi relay for 2 yrs with no probs apart from running in limp mode the last few months but it didn't flag up the eng man light.. now the fuel pump has failed, it has blown the top seal.. so purchased a warranted second hand pump which I've fitted.. van starts 1st time & sounds sweet on tick over but when you rev it, it goes lumpy & stalls.. double checked timing, it were ok but then realised it had variable cam sprocket timing so redone timing by the book & made no diff but now has flagged up the eng man light.. from wot I have gathered, there appears to be cpl of various timing marks on poss diff models, mine are 8 o'clock ish on cam & in rear of flywheel behind driver side drive shaft at the base of block (rear of engine).. I gotta friend of a friend popping round to plug his comp in so may know more then.. any help/advice appreciated guys & sorry bout the essay but couldn't keep it brief without explain details..
