C5 2.2L slow turning over and not starting issue?

Post by fotobright »

Hi,

I wonder if someone might have some suggestion about how to repair this starting issue.

I got in car this morning and it turned over very slowly and wouldn't start, I tried again and then slower second time and now not at all.

I've just taken the battery out, which is a new replacement battery 6 months old. The car has had the occasional moment over the last month getting going. Mostly though at the start of the return journey from work, not the morning.

I'm thinking, battery, earthing issue or starter motor. I've just put the battery on charge but the lights appear to tell me its holding a charge. I'll leave on overnight and put back in.

I'm wondering if there is a specific C5 issue I should be looking at. An earth strap or similar?

Any thoughts or links most welcome.

Yeh replacing the battery 6 moths ago certainly fixed the original issues. Will charge and put back tomorrow am.

If it then works however it means something else is wrong though I guess..

If it fixes it, then yes.....not many problems other than the normal alternator /charging problems that come with age on the |C5, its all quite standard stuff...

I have not had any myself other than a dead battery and a constant short time to "power save" mode.
I seem to of solved that with a solar charger.......................and the earth/power leads do not seem to suffer the problems the Xantia does.
I have a 75ah battery on it.

strange innit, years ago, while I was working for a forklift firm the consensus was once you've got it turning, keep it going till it fires.........(specially in winter.......)..

reading the modern battery advice is

"a modern battery will only give full power in short bursts.............."

It may well turn out to be the starter - happened with both my C5s.

Thanks for all thoughts so far.

Well I put the battery back in after a charge overnight and its still dead. At least it locks now work :)

I had a look at the two earth straps which attach to the body next to the battery and they seem well fixed. What should I look at next?

When you get it started check for around 14.4 volts across the battery that will prove or otherwise the alternator, if its charging OK as suggested it could be the starter moter or even the battery.

Was it a euro car parts Lion brand battery by any chance ?
Have you tried using jump leads from another car ? you can also use jump leads as temporary earths for testing purposes.

The battery was Ebay and on the 'inexpensive' spectrum of prices. It might be bad or maybe ok but its not starting the car ha. Then it might not be the issue. My pal with the jump leads and lexia doesnt have time till Monday to do this so might be time to tap the starter and solenoid and see if anything free up.

I just remembered, as part of a mini service we reprogrammed the key fob as it had stopped locking from the fob. I'm wondering if there been a parallel issue which a BSI reset might help to assist in addressing the non start. Is it worth doing a BSI reset now?

Indeed it seems as if the starter motor has gone. A new one should be arriving today.

Whats the procedure and tools needed to change this over on a 2.2L ? I'm asking as i'll most likely have to do this on the street without ramps.

Thanks

It's quite easy to do on these engines. I've done a couple over the years, last one when in France. I bet my mate I could do it in under half an hour. Won some wine that trip!
Seriously though it's just the usual disconnect the battery first routine, it's best to follow the re-connect procedure if possible. (but I've often just slapped the battery leads right back on and had no problems.) It's well positioned at the front of the engine block so it's do-able with no ramps on your own.
On mine the brushed had turned to mush. Don't know how it ever worked really...
Write back how you get on.
