Wheel bearings, which one to get?

Unread post by Ianhw77k »

I need to change the front os wheel bearing on my synergie. I was going to go with the SKF bearing kit from Eurocarparts for around £45 but thought I'd just quickly check ebay.
Now I see bearings ranging from just over a tenner to over £60!
I'm wondering if anyone here has any recommendations, on where to buy from and preferred manufacturers?

Thanks.

SKF bearings are probably hard to beat but you do have to watch out for snidy ones from China - the way to tell is proper SKF bearings have text that is difficult to see whereas the knock-offs have perfectly legible text on them.

We (work) have used Eriks and found them highly satisfactory and very helpful. They are not automotive oriented though.

SKF or SNR - don't buy a cheap one unless you want to change it again next year! mister-auto usually has good prices - I got SKF ones for my 307 (which include the ABS track so are dear) for around £40.

..... or alternatively get a complete hub assembly from a scrapper - less work to fit and the chances of getting another duff one are pretty remote, or at least they have been in my experience.

I'll always use MAPCO ones from now on bought on EBay from Germany.. They're £21 and TUV approved and beat the other £30 ones by literally miles.over 40,000 as opposed to anywhere between 10 and 20,000.

These ones have lasted 20 years and nearly 190,000 miles. I don't suppose I can expect that from an aftermarket jobbie.
Thanks for the advice, I think I'll stick to SKF from a reputable source. The fitting isn't a problem now either, we got ourselves a press recently.

SKF is OE, no reason why one of them shouldn't last as long as the original.

If I was still South I'm sure I wouldn't have had as many bearings as I have had with all these potholled roads up here.

What makes you think our roads are any better? I've just come back from Scotland. :)
