XantiaClutch

Post by davecmusic »

Last call on this ailing old beast. Its went in for the crankshaft pulley and when backing it out the mechanic put his foot on the clutch and it went to the floor. He pulled it up and it jammed solid. He checked the car and says its a hydraulic clutch. Its a Xantia Estate 2.0 HDi. The log book says 90BHp which I assume is a cable but this one apparently is hydraulic. I have to say it goes like stink and is far faster than my old 90bhp hdi Picasso. He thinks the bearing has gone through the pressure plate and when he lifted it up its adjusted itself leaving zero pedal travel. Its MOT is up 20th August and it needs about £300 spent on it to get through. It only cost £500 in Feb as a stop gap so am thinking it my be not worth doing. Shame as everything (including the aircon) works well. I would appreciate advice on the clutch issue guys.

If I'm remembering right then only the V6 manual Xantia has a hydraulic clutch in Rhd cars. I think it sounds like the old clutch pedal clip as detailed here. Its a pain of a job but not so bad it'd be worth scrapping a good Xantia over. If it's the original part it's done well, mine was going to let go around 111k.

The HDI 110, 2.0 TCT and 21. TD (everythin with the ML5 gearbox) also had hydraulic clutch, but not (as fas as I know the HDI 90.

You need to check which gearbox/clutch you actually have. If you post the last 8 digits of your VIN, someone can look it up on the Citroen database.

Vin is 63124454. Mechanic insists its a hydro clutch but I suppose he may not want to simply do it...... Appreciate the support. If I decide to not sort it out I will put it up for sale because it has nothing that can't be sorted by someone with the time and knowledge.

I guess it all depends on how much you "love " her. Mine has done 293K on the original clutch and I'm saving up to have a new one fitted .. although it has to be said there's no slippage at all on this one.. Personally I wouldn't swap my car ..I've had it since new and it owes me nothing.. costs me about 21p a mile to run.. including tax ins. mot, everything and I get between 55 winter, and 64, best mpg. So if you did the clutch as well as the work for the MOT it would cost about £6-700 and you'll most likely get another 150k our of her.. What would it cost to buy another car?
Certainly I was under the impression that all 110's has hydraulic and 90's had cable clutches.
Good Luck with whatever you decide.

you should be able to see if it's cable or hydraulics just by looking under the bonnet. As someone else said, if it's cable operated it's probably the pedal clip broken. If it's hydraulic it's probably a pull type clutch and the bearing has parted company with the cover.

Sorry, I have been unable to get that VIN number to decode. I am now sure that an HDI 90 should have a BE3 transmission and cable clutch. A HDI 90 VIN will start VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]......... A HDI 110 VIN will start VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff].........

Thanks for the help. I will look at it after work today. I am assuming that because its jammed up and solid its possibly more than the clip but will check. After talking with my other half I think it may be time to part company though it will be up for sale first as its a solid motor.

All the best in your search for a new other half, the car should be a reliable item once fixed. :)

Well the insurance and DVLA say its a 90 but it has a hydraulic clutch system (found it clearly last night).

So if the pedal went to the floor and when pulled up was solid that means the bearing has gone (probably through the plate as in my old BX) as suggested by 2 different garages. Car will be up for sale then as I am not going to fix it, don't have the time which is a shame as it was a nice drive. Still think it drove like a 110 as it goes like stink when it was driving. It shot up the climb on the A55 in Wales. Saying that as a restoration or parts car its good and still got a short MOT. Hopefully someone will take it or it will be the bean tin makers...

So ... is it a 90 or 110bhp? Has it got the two air pipes in parallel under the bonnet or just the one?

DVLA says 90bhp. Insurance says 90bhp. Engine looks like a 110bhp from pics and I can see the 2 pipes. Cheaper insurance if it gets back on the road then! Would explain the clutch. Still not doing it though.
