Peugeot 307 Heater Matrix

Post by DHallworth »

My sister rang the other night complaining of smoke coming from the vents in her car. Turns out she was being a drama queen and it's actually steam. When we had a look at it, there was no coolant in the bottle and a puddle in the footwell. She then turns around and says "my windows have been steaming up a lot recently too".

Anyway, does anyone know what sort of a job this is to do? It's a 2003 1.4 Petrol, the pre facelift model. I've seen a video of a 406 one being changed with only the centre console and the glovebox removed.

Annoyingly she nearly traded it in a couple of months back but decided to wait until the 65 plates come out! Argh!

In all fairness, she bought this 307 when it was 2 years old with 18k on the clock. It's now 12 years old with 120k on the clock and it's been a bloody good car.

Haynes implies it is easy, as it doesn't mention removing the dash, but in the picture the dash has clearly been removed (probably for clarity in Haynes speak!). The matrix slides into the heater box from the passenger foot well, so it may well be do-able with the glovebox / carpet removed on the LHS. On the other hand, this is PSA!!

Relevant page from the BOL. Pic at bottom right clearly shows the dash removed....!

Thanks, Richard.

The AA have been out and bypassed it for now which means she can at least drive it home from Newcastle. If it's at home at least I've got all the tools to hand and can have a good go at it rather then working on the road side and realising I've left something I need at home.

Will order the parts before she brings the car home at the end of the month.

This thread: http://www.peugeotcentral.co.uk/ftopic-2096.html certainly implies it's possible without dash removal - once you get past all the stupid comments about the matrix being under the bonnet somewhere :) There are several different matrices (none of which are particularly cheap!), with corresponding pipe sets:

Reference Description Quantity Price - VAT Price + VAT Total + VAT Selection
00006448K1 PIPE SET 18.52 GBP 22.22 GBP 22.22 GBP

00006448K5 PIPE SET 66.80 GBP 80.16 GBP 80.16 GBP

00006448N5 HEATER 131.62 GBP 157.94 GBP 157.94 GBP

00006448N9 PIPE SET 19.81 GBP 23.77 GBP 23.77 GBP

00006448P5 PIPE SET 11.78 GBP 14.14 GBP 14.14 GBP

00006448K0 HEATER 92.56 GBP 111.07 GBP 111.07 GBP

00006448K3 HEATER 136.42 GBP 163.70 GBP 163.70 GBP

00006448L0 HEATER 129.77 GBP 155.72 GBP 155.72 GBP

The part for ours is 6448K3 which Peugeot retail at £163. Trade price is £125.

I rang AEP in Rutherglen who have said they can do an aftermarket one for £25. As my sister is going to trade it in within the next 12 months it's going to get an aftermarket one.

This was actually an incredibly easy job! 40 minutes from start to finish :)

Heater Matrix from AEP for £25 was a Nissens one as well so should hopefully be good.

You take the glove box out (6 torx screws), the carpet above the passengers feet off (3 pop studs), and the plastic part of the transmission tunnel (2 torx screws) and the heater matrix is clearly visible. One screw out of the end of the matrix and the pipes come off. I took the pipes off under the bonnet as well so that it wasn't bending the plastic ones inside the car and the whole thing slid out.

New one went straight in and was refitted! A very easy job! I wish they were all like that!

Nice one! Sometimes the RH drive mod works in our favour (not often mind!) - on a LHD car this would be a steering column out job
