Worth swapping C5 for C6?

Post by osx »

With the exception of some teething problems - some expected from a second hand car - I am quite happy with my latest C5 but have the opportunity to swap it with a C6. Slightly more mileage but one owner and well looked after and serviced at the local Citroen dealer. It will be more expensive to run (tax and diesel will be about £1000 extra per annum) but I am more concerned about expensive future repairs. The other option would be to keep both but until I extend the garage it will be one or the other.
Is LPG conversion a good idea for the C6?

My researches into C6s a few years back got some poor responses from C6 owners, who complained about Citroen's poor quality of construction/parts.
I love the shape (as an ex-CX owner of several years ...+ 4 DSs) but Citroen's history of messing up stuff dissuaded me (Think XM, CX etc, all of which ended up either (DS) having the old engine, or being rust bucket (CX Ser 1) or being generally poor (early XM). No 'Kaizen' philosophy here!
I believe the C5 used same base as C6 (though not same suspension?)
Of course, here are quite a few C6s out there seemingly going OK.......it's finding the ones whose owners haven't got fed up with dripfeed of repairs?
£1000 extra a year would say 'No' to me!
But then, if I had £7/8K for a car, I might still invest in getting a CX rebuilt!
THEN I'd enjoy it.

None of this answers the question that was asked........

The answer really is, it depends on what you're going to use the car for! I know some people who have gone down the LPG route, and the engine does work well with it, BUT, please bear in mind that the majority of conversions mean the spare well is utilised, therefore if you have a C6 with Lounge Pack, you are also going to have a great big wheel in the boot.

I had the 407 3.0 V6 Coupé converted and the switch from Petrol to LPG wasn't noticeable nor to be fair was the performance, what I found most annoying was having to go to the gas pump every few days.

The other thing to bear in mind is cost of the conversion and notifying your insurance company, there is a £10 saving on the RFL though. Unless you plan to use the car everyday for a chunk of miles I really wouldn't bother.

With a C6 history is everything, more so with a petrol version as there are only 36 with know about......

With a C6 cost of spares will/is? a problem or soon will be, I am sure a lot of bits will go NFP soon as on the early C5Mk1's....like the Xantia Activa, not many places have that many spares and Citroen are being really brutal with their stock back-up.

How many parts are unique is a BIG question theses days, and is a "parts" car essential.

The Activa is my first "old" car I have ever felt the need to have 1or2 cars as back-up and recent trawling thru Cit-service has just confirmed this need.

I agree, although, a lot of parts are generic to the Peugeot 407 too, they have the same floor plan.... the price of parts that are unique can be ludicrous, for example a new rear bumper is around the £1200 Mark, windscreen are £1000. A big factor, is the lead time for these items, I've heard tales of dealers quoting ridiculous lead times for the item to turn up the following day...... the whole parts system is at fault.

I recommend nth had cause to going into Peugeot where the person buying an item had the part numbers taken from servicebox, only to find out the part number had been changed......

The sheer volume of C6 makes parts expensive, but he same could be said following RFL, £485 s a lot of money, but taken monthly it isn't! And I say that loosely...... taken over a 12 months h period it's less than £50 per month, in Eire it's over €1000.......

Yes there is cause to consider a donor car, something David Hallworth and I have discussed at great length. For me though the idea of taking a C6 off the road to be a donor car is daft, hats precisely why the 2.2 David got was restored. Had in been beyond repairable it would have been scrapped.

The diesel engines are pretty good but don't get an auto, failure of the box will probably write it off.
