[96 Synergie 1.9 XUD] No turbo boost, what are these parts?

Post by kenbw2 »

I'm lacking turbo boost at the usual 2000 or so revs that I'd normally get. When it reaches high revs (nowhere near redlining but still labouring it) it has a slight but sudden power drop. Everything's fine and as normal except for it becomes defeated by steep hill or high speeds, needing me to accelerate more and/or drop a gear. Anything below where the turbo would normally kick in is fine.

I think (though can't be sure) that this has followed me replacing the starter motor. Obviously that's not directly the cause, but I could have knocked something. I also had a fair bit of sparking when removing the old starter (I then insulated the loose cables), but I understand that no electronics are involved in the XUD's turbo.

So I'm trying to work out what the situation is. Without a Haynes I'm struggling to identify anything.

There's a pipe that goes over the top of the engine which sucks air towards the back (even when Idling) - is this the return from the intercooler (which I assume to be in front of the radiator)?

I'd appreciate if anyone could identify the parts annotated below

the fat one on the left comes from the intercooler, the one at the bottom right you cant see will be the other intercooler pipe,

the intercooler is between the the coolant rad and the front panel,

if you have any of the vacuum pipes/hoses split or disconnected the turbo will not work,

you are aware ( now at least ) you should disconnect the battery when working on permanent live cables/connections, as on the starter

Yep. My reason for not disconnecting the power is because my immobiliser keypad is iffy, and disconnecting the battery kicks that in, which is unreliable. I should have at least insulated the cables from the get go rather than half way through. I think I'm correct in thinking that shouldn't have affected this though?

As for the pipes, I think that's what I assumed, good to have confirmation. If there's pressure coming from the places I described, does that imply the turbo is indeed functioning as it should, or could there be something else I need to check?

pressure from these pipes can just be induction from the engine
